main edc carry: ZT 0551, gen 2, got it used on BF nicely sharpened and upgraded. This is my main carry now, custom scale and lantern included.

i think in an emergency a flipper is more likely too fail then a thumb stud with a stiff knife. i have a lot of broken in wrist flippers my trusty sandman always deploys by wrist, blade not loose, well broken in.

i like flippers, my second edc kai lehar 1750 carry is a flipper, but unless it is super smooth and/or loose a flipper is more likely too miss deployment then a thumb stud.

IMHO.

i just wondered how many other people are obsolete like me?

I believe in bear trap springs on slipjoints and overhard backlevers on lockbacks, so I'm totally in the obsolete crew. And I'm even such a pervert that I may enjoy a pure piemont lock friction folder. "Flipping" is not and has never been a concern. Seriously, if you can open your knife single or two handed within a second or two you're set. In everyday real life, I mean. OCR ! (Obsolete Crew Rules !).

Who said it's obsolete? I love flippers, but I love lockbacks...the two don't go together. Btw...the flipper fail...??? Not likely.

I have two flippers, a JYD and a JYD II TI/SG2. Neither one ever goes out the front door. Matter of fact, they never leave their place in storage. I hate them, they rarely ever open all the way unless I flick my wrist at the same time. So I just prefer good old holes and studs to get my knives open, thank you very much.

Old crew rules.

I think it's pretty common for the JYD to have a weak detent, thus meaning they don't flip out super easily without using your wrist. But regardless, the original poster of the thread this thread is aimed at was clearly trolling, especially if you look at past threads he made.

You nailed that ! As I'm soaring close to sixties I can totally hop on the ancestors bandwagon. "Old Crew Rules" gets my vote. Flip, pinch, thumb or flick : everybody does as he likes. But my preference is thumb studs (or holes) all the way : they worked best for me.

And that thread has been closed by Esav, with the advice to "not feed the trolls". ;-)

Pinnah, you got a fine knife there... Beauty of the endlessly customizable Opinel ! I bet this feels incredibly well in hand... I'm sad the n°9 or even n°10 are so difficult to get.

If "dragonspayer" and "blixx" are the same poster I go eat my hat (solid sweat drenched felt) and will probably die of shame (or poison). However, I love how the thread derailed to traditionals. I see some sense here...

A person is more likely to fail under a stressful situation. Adrenaline surges and fine motor skills/coordination do not play well together. What you are discussing or attempting to discuss as being a mechanical dlaw in the tool is actually a mechanical failure in the person. I don't see how the obsolecence angle fits in here.

Now you've been here long enough to know these threads do not belong in General Knife Dscussion. We have prac tac for these kinds of things.

CBXER - being the nice guy I am, I'll gladly ease the burden of that TI/SG2 JYD, less hate makes for an easier life:D

I have to admit though, I am a flipper guy to the end. Been offloading my non flippers like crazy, except my snody resistor, zt0550, and zt mudd

"I don't see how the obsolecence angle fits in here."

Sorry for pushing the wheel. I found the concept of "obsolescence" applied to a knife (any knife) so ridiculous that I had to start jokes with it. I will keep them to myself from now on.

I have 2 flippers, and like 30 knives, so I would assume the rest aren't obsolete. I would hate to see a slip joint with a flipper, or an Axis-style with a flipper (it generally doesn't work, because flippers need a detent to work easily and smoothly, or a really heavy blade, or an assist). Flippers are cool to have, but so far away from necessary it isn't even funny. A flipper used to be an absolute must for my knives, but when I got a ZT 550 I realized that studs work perfectly. I have only gotten one flipper since (Lahar) and it hasn't bothered me.

Also, there are lockback flippers. One of the Chinese Kershaws is a flipper lockback, and the SOG Twitch also is a lockback. The thing is that all of the lockback flippers I have seen are assisted.

One last thing, if you think knives without a flipper are obsolete, try out a butterfly knife with a flipper, and tell me how useless that is.

HAHA! Nice try. That TI/SG2 is in a Soprano's collector series cigar box with four other titanium frame locks. If I sold it, there would be an empty spot. Even though I do not care for it all that much, it needs to stay where it's at. Until such a time as someone wants to buy the whole shebang for an appropriate price that is. It's not for sale, but you know how that works. ;-)

Oh yeah: if you'll note in the pics, I actually put a One-Arm Bandit on the JYD II so I can open it like a regular manual action knife. Works much better than the stupid flipper.

And another with the real deal, CAO exceptional stogies.
