getting back into beer after not drinking for a long time. like 16 years. got it in my head i couldn't be an athlete and drink. i really missed a beer w/ steak or chili.

so i like Guinness, with Newcastle Brown Ale right up there as well.

given those, what would anyone recommend?

our local distributor has a dizzying selection. just finished a Unibroue 'Trois Pistoles' ( http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22/30 ) and it was fricken' amazing.

If you're in Upstate NY, Try locating some Ommegang. They brew some really nice Belgian-style ales at a much better price point than some of the Belgians.

just picked up some Ommegang Hennipen and Rare Vos. big bottles, saving them for company, can't wait....

I'm not into the very dark beers, like Guiness. But if you like Guiness, I think you would also like Berghoff Dark (found in the Chicago area).

I've drank "unfiltered" microbrews before, but some of the Ommegang selections have a thick layer of silt (mostly yeast) on the bottom -- you may want to take this into consideration when "decanting" it into a glass, as some folks will get ill from drinking the yeast (severe headaches are one possible symptom). It also has a strong flavour and a high alcohol content, so you really need to sample a bottle of each BEFORE offering Ommegang to guests.

If you enjoy Guinness, here are a couple others that are just as good:

Oatmeal Stout from Tadacaster Brewery
Imperial Stout from Tadacaster Brewery
St Peter's Porter

If you want high alcohol content, look for "Bigfoot" barleywine style ale from Sierra Nevada. I made the mistake of drinking a 6er of this once.

If you want something interesting, look for "Midas Touch" from Dogfish.

Pretty much EVERYTHING from Stone (a local brewery here, but you can get it nationally). I mainly drink Guiness, Newcastle, Fosters, Murphy's Stout, Chimay, Traquoir, Sam Adams, Stella, Fat Tire Ale or pretty much anything from Sierra Nevada, Grolsch, Steinlager, Dead Guy Ale, Harp, Smitwicks and maybe a few others in no apparent order other than the first three ;)

this weekends samplings were:

Young's Double Chocolate Stout (very good. smooth. only hints of chocolate and coffee. good stout, slightly less 'bitter bite' than Guinness. very drinkable)

Unibroue 'Trois Pistoles' (a belgian strong dark ale. omg amazing. the label warned of sediment. sweet yeastyness and an amazing flavor with enough body to conceal the 9% alcohol....i'm a lightweight. can't really describe how good this one was.)

I'm more of a whiskey guy, but I do like Paulaner Salvatore, a German double bock, and Smithwicks-probably the second best beer in Ireland.

Jack

ditto Omegang, the belgians mentioned and sweet sweet Stone brewery...

A few more you might like given what you initially mentioned and others you've tasted....

From dark/heavy to light, very mixed styles/geography, all tasty

Old Rasputin Imperial Stout (strong!)
Spaten Optimator
Dragon Stout
Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout
Affligem Dubbel
Chimay Grande Reserve
Alesmith Nautical Nut Brown
Chimay Red
Boddingtons
Chimay Cinq Cents
Kasteel
Scotch Silly

If you like Guinness, see if you can get Murphy's. It is lighter and not as bitter which makes it a lot easier to drink.

Athough nothing like the beers you like, I would also suggest your search out Chimay Red. Buy a case and keep it for a few years. I had some 10 years past its sell by date and it was fantastic! It is made by monks in Belgium.

Yes, made by trappist monks in the Scourmont abbey, not far from my home. The red one is great but the blue one is better. Take care, it's a 9 volts.
Andrew, you have kept a case of Chimay for ten years?! Hat down! My own record is ten days!

I bought 23 x 70 cl bottles for 50 pence a bottle that was already 1 year out of date. I only opened them on special occasions, including when a friend from Belgium visited every 2 years.

Here it's 24 x 33cl for 1 euro (1.4 usd) the bottle. You get a good price. It's the only alcoholic drink i like.

Youngs is ALWAYS amazing in my books. Also try Murpheys Stout as well. Very nice.
