If I like the Jack pattern....

...what other patterns would I probably go for?

(By Jack, I mean the small Texas Jack by Case, or the dogleg Jack by Queen, etc.)

I find that I really like the way my Case small Texas Jack carries, and the two-blade style with one long clip and one short pen is exceedingly useful. I thought I would similarly like the mini-Trapper pattern, but it seems that although it fills the hand better, the blade choices aren't as useful for me.

So, who else here likes a jack pattern for EDC, and what other kinds of patterns might I like based on this preference?

Thanks,

Matthew

I've always prefered a 2 blade knife over a 3 blade myself. I can't really explain why.

I like a two bladed jack also. I either carry a Queen Gunstock or a Schatt Morgan English Jack. I have a Queen Congress, but rarely carry it. I like those two blade knives better myself. Can't explain it, I just do! :D

The Case Jack works for me in my EDC pool.... the CV Amber Bone. I really like it a lot.

But a close second is the equivalent Stockman....

Hi oldewelder,

I almost bought the S&M English Jack for my birthday, but declined since it is such a huge knife (8" overall length, if I recall correctly)! What a shame though, since it is a beautiful knife.

Rod - I'll have to take a look at picking up a stockman pattern. The ones I've handled in the store (all Schrade OT) have not captured my attention. That sister to my jack knife looks like a beauty though! I'm only concerned that more than two blades may be too much for my limited attention span :)

PWork - I like the Teardrop I've seen from S&M. I'm just not sure I want 420HC :( Know of any better ones out there?

Matthew

You might like a peanut, but they are a bit on the small side and a lot more rounded. You will get the blade configuration you are looking for though. I have an old Case one that I like a lot.

Starfish, the S&M is the only production tear drop that I know of. Maybe one of the German manufacturers has one?

Go to Cumberlandknifeworks.com. He has them.

When I looked at this page , it says 4.5" closed. Do you see another English Jack that I haven't found?

oh please, oh please....

Take care,

Matthew

the one I have. Go under Bill's Schatt Morgan section, to the section that says "Reproductions" then keep going until you see a Sunfish, an English Jack, and a Toothpick. That is the English Jack I have. I think that one you posted would drag my pants down! :D

That's a beautiful knife oldewelder. I'll have to admit that the larger knife with the stag scales and ATS-34 steel really got my juices flowing, but the smooth buffalo horn on the smaller version has a classy look. I wonder what makes a Jack an "English Jack"?

Have you used this knife (or any of the other S&M 420HC steel knives) enough to be able to form an opinion about edgeholding and sharpness? How does it compare to the SAK for example?

Take care,

Matthew

My favorite blades in a slipjoint are the pen from a Canoe and the Clip from a stockman. BTW I was the guy that was asking about Queen Canoes, then I noticed their Serpentine Jack combines these two blade (clip/pen) I'm curious how this knife compares to a Canoe and to Queen's Gunstock Trapper? I was going to buy a Canoe, BUT if I can get a Clip/Pen combo instead of a Spear/Pen combo I think I'd like it better, I much prefer a pen to a spey blade.

that Gunstock in cocobolo is one of my favorite knives. I got it as a Christmas present and have loved it since I got it. It feels really good in my hand and its easy to use, no blades grinding into my hand, like the Sheepsfoot blade Mooremaker stockman does. It's a pretty cheap knife too.
Starfish, I only have a SAK Farmer to compare that Shatt Morgan to. But I haven't really ever compared the two. The Schatt is easy, easy to sharpen, seems to hold an edge reasonably well. But I do have to sharpen it a helluva alot more than that Queen D2. That stuff never seems to go dull!

Gunstocks look good, how do they carrry in pocket (relative to a Canoe or small stockman) and how do they compare to the serpentine jack? Also, how many backsprings do they have, I know a Canoe has one, but don't the gunstock and jack have two?

What about the European Copperhead made by
the German manufactuers? Sexy lines, covered
blade ends and it feels great in the hand. My
favorite pattern.

Good suggestion. I've seen the copperheads put out by Eye brand; it's on my list of knives to buy :)

Doctor's knife is nothing but a fancied up Jack knife.:D
(Sorry, had to plug one of my favorite patterns.)

Sure, but all the two-bladed doctor's knives I've seen had one blade that came dull out of the box! :p ;)
