First id like to say hello everyone ...im new here
ive worked on corvettes for 16 years and i was thinking of making custom micarta but was wondering if it would be a waste of time or would people be interested in stuff like this?
id like some input on sizes that are used and colors used a lot ...everyones input would be very helpful ...

I would post this in the knife makers forums and ask them. If you can give them the quality they want at a price that beats their current supplier I would think they would be interested. Or are you talking about making your own custom micarta scales?

I think there's a market for it, particularly if you took orders/requests for materials and color combinations. But you'd have to put some samples into peoples hands so they can confirm the quality and build up a reputation for yourself.

I made my own, with a simple manual press, but would never think to sell it. Too many voids, kinda uneven layers, and I haven't done any kind of testing to see how strong this stuff really is - or compare it to the widely available or other custom makers out there.

it would be custom colors like 3/8" thick 2" wide 6" long is what i was thinking but i really dont know so thats why im asking

btw ...nice work

Thank you.

I like 3/8 as a starting point, but some may find it rather beefy. 1 1/2 x 5 seems to be kind of a standard for scales, but every once in a while people may need larger. Would you be willing/able to plane it thinner or cut it smaller to make it easier for the bloke who's going to shape it? Some people make their own scales not just because it's a great way to bond with their knife, but because they have hand tools - but buying pre-made scales or fancy power tools digs too far into the budget. In my most humble opinion, most people who intend to shape scales will have some way of cutting it to length, but ripping it is harder and thinning it out while keeping it flat takes fairly specialized tools.

i can make them any size ...if i was to shape it also then i would have to have the blade and a lot more detail ...but yes i can make them thinner and narrower and shorter

I prefer micarta over G-10 as scale material, but I may be in the minority. I'm older, and it may correlate with age (but not sure).

There is always a market for quality handle material. Consistent, high quality, tough, and long lasting is key to success. Personally, I would love to see some blue denim micarta type material.

I have made some also. I think if you can make some cool colors & designs you might do OK. I would like to see orange.

Im with you on that one i love the look and feel of micarta. I only have 2 knives with it so far (small seb with inlays and a pipsqueak) but they feel so nice. I would be interestedin seeing some micarta scales for my zt 0561.

im going to make some for Chris Taylor ...green canvas ...after that i was going to make some blue denim ... then some black and gray ...ill post some pictures ...im working 2 jobs right now so im short on time

Make sure you post photos here, I'd be really curious to see what you come up with. Also, the colors sound cool.
