if imitation = flattery, then RYP should be very flattered!

remind anyone of anything?

while there's nothing new under the sun, this sure looks like it was "inspired" by the HEST

http://www.topsknives.com/product_info.php?products_id=315

i'd rather have 1095 than 440C

You mean because it's name is "ex est" or whatever?

TOPS just doesn't do it for me. I'm sure they are pretty tough knives but they have offered things in the past that had some fairly interesting claims.

I mean, to me, this is just a non-starter. If they are trying to cash in on the HEST, I just don't see it. I'd rather have my HEST.

I see minor similarity with the handle design, but that's it.

You mean the storage area?

Knives of Alaska had the Survival/Defense Model out before the H.E.S.T. and Tekna had it years ago along with Timberline Survival Knives. Timberline had the arrowhead, too! :D

The name of this knife from TOPS is interesting to ponder, but this thing just looks like it has had too many cheeseburgers, it's a fat bastard. :D

simiklar name, similar scales, similar thumb ramp.

enough differences to avoid being called a direct copy, bot lots of similarity other than both being knives.

oh, it's also twice the price of a HEST!

Well, that's a damned great thing because the H.E.S.T. is half the price and twice the knife.

It's not even remotely screaming "Hey I'm a HEST" to me. Heck the more I look at it the less like a HEST it looks. TOPS knives is a good company, an they also use Rowen for their blades.

biggest thing it doesn't have? RYP!

I can't imagine a person buying a HEST without at least a little tip of the cap to the man who spends all that time in dangerous places
- I know it's that way for me....

ok...plus the HEST is better sized, has more tools, better ergo's, backed by ESEE, etc....

The HEST was from from the first to have storage in the handle. I mean I see that the concept is similar, but that's about it.

Similar, yes, copy, no.

440 is a great steel. It's not over hyped like alot of the newer "super" steels nowadays but it does all the cutting most folks need to do and does it well.

I'm going to close this thread. It can't really go anywhere but a bashing session and thats not at all what we try to be about here.

TOPS is a good, american company making good knives.
