If money and accessibility are not problems then what are the best materials for the following:

1. 12" blade Bowie.
2. 9" camp knife.
3. 7" combat/tactical knife.
4. 7" fighter.
5. 4" large folder.
6. 3" skinner.
7. 28" katana.

The assumption here is that all heat treating and tempering will be done correctly according to the material and design selected.

Also, please stay on topic and no pissing contest.

Yea and when I said that above I wasnt joking, if money was no object then I seriously think that DAMASCUS would be your best bet on any knife..

Nam,
I started a thread earlier this week,
"Help, looking for a maker that can do it all!"

and your list is not all that much different from my list,

What I would be looking for, (All Stag definitely, Damascus would be awesome)
Bowie
Fighter
Dagger
Boot knife
Loveless style drop point Hunter
Lock back Hunter
Liner lock
Automatic, possibly an Italian style Stiletto
Gents knife
Multi-blade, slip lock Trapper

My thought was for a display one handle material and a certain consistant style, one maker seemed to be one way to achieve that.

Money was an object then, I figured a couple of years, I've had a financial setback, so it's even more of a consideration now, but I will get it done, there's really no hurry. I've got enough knives to cut what I need to cut.

"Will work 4 Knives!"

Nam,

I have limited experience with most of the knife lenghts you mentioned. But from a performance standpoint:

4" large folder = CPM-420V
I only have two of this bigger size folders with 420V, but both are a joy to use and hold an edge longer than any folders I've used.

3" skinner = D2
God knows I love skinners. Out of 23 skinners, 16 are in D2 ranging from 2 1/2" to 3 1/4". Take a scary sharp edge, and easy to maintain.

While I don't have any 7" combat/tactical and fighter (well I do have a fighter about 7" long, but I've never used it, so I don't have any comment on it), I have a Busse Basic 7" that fits as a all-purpose knife. Modified INFI is as good as any blade steel out there, if not better. I don't have any experience with INFI, if it is any better than Modif INFI, then INFI would be my choice. I have heard good things about CPM-3V, and that thing is still on my list, so if any of you have experienced the 3V please jump in (Ed Schott and all).

A note: I recently acquired a Talonite knife with 3 1/2" blade. So far it has outperformed the cutting performance of any other steel I've ever laid my hands on. BUT this is a very recent knife, and I will reserve my judgement until later, and so far I have not done any toughness test.
