If Spyderco made a small gent's folder, what should it look like?

When I think "gent's folder" I usually imagine sub-3", very slim, and some kind of classy scales.

The carbon fiber Dragonfly and Mouse are probably the closest things to a gent's folder now. Sal & Co. might even be able to be persuaded to make the Lum Chinese in a small size (hint, hint). But what would you like to see if Spyderco came up with something COMPLETELY new?

I would love a Spydie Gent. I think that a mini Lum tanto. Very cool. Sub 3" is a good idea, titanium handle, needs to be slim. If it lives up to those standards, I want one!

Great! Just another Spydie to backorder and wait for!

As previously stated, slim is important in a gent's folder. I would add that having a colored, decorated handle with either no clip or a recessed clip would be good on this style of knife. I personally would like to see a narrow, flat ground blade on this type of folder as it would be perfect for it's uses,(letter opener ect...). I would go for any blade point shape. Thanks for hearing me out and be careful out there!

Doesn't the Viele model qualify as a gent's knife? Or are you thinking along the lines of William Henry, etc?

A day without Spydies is like a day without ... WELL, Spydies!!!

They already make a gent's folder line: The Solos.

Slim, micarta scales, leather sheath (no clip). Currently in two sizes. Only available through SFO or through the Spyderco website.

I think my "Toad" qualifies as a "gents" pocketknife. It isn't really all that thin because of the pocket clip. However, the clip looks like it could be removed easily. But, I figure I need the clip because sometimes I use the Toad as a moneyclip.

You know, in an earlier "what would you like to see from Spyderco" thread, I had asked for a gents folder that would compete with the likes of William Henry (or, perhaps more reasonably, Benchmades gents' folder line). Having had some time to think about it, I'm unsure of that suggestion.

Spyderco has really emphasized performance, even when aesthetics was part of the picture. Could Spyderco really out-William-Henry William Henry, even with the big hole breaking up what needs to be long lines and elegant curves? If so, my hat's off to Spyderco! If not, I'd be just as happy with Spyderco leaving this niche alone and sticking with "gent-like" folders, but that still sacrifice aesthetics for opening holes and broken lines.

I think I've come to the conclusion that Spyderco's in-house designs are my favorite among all production companies, and their collaborations are obviously excellent as well, so if it's possible to mate classic elegance, diminutive size, and blade holes, they're the ones to do it.

I don't know how many of you have seen the BM 770 Osborne, but it is what I would call a Gent's Folder, par excellence. If you haven't, take a quick look here: http://www.gpknives.com/benchmade/benchmade770.html I have one which I use when I am going places where I need something that won't startle non-knife people, such as my Quaker Meeting. It fills the bill admirably well, but I would like it better with a Spyderhole, even though I haven't figured out how it would work, and a blade of CPM440V. A little of the sculpturing that Osborne put into his beautiful 940 would not hurt, either.

It would clear be....
the Michael Walker lightweight w/ CF scales.
or
CF Cricket
or
Mouse, customized by Recuerpo
OR
the Jess Horn/Jigged bone model.
The gent's Spydercos are out there.
But there never did seem to be much of a demand for them, I guess. I like them though.

I had the luck to find an Excutive plain.
This is the real gent's folder. Anyway also my Tufram Plain Cricket or my Plai Pegasus have the gent's look.

EX ALTO FULGOR

I'd have to say the mini-dyad with micarta scales is a fine gents folder, once you remove the clip.

Small Lum tanto? Yummm... Navy or denim blue anodized with a leather pouch would be nice, too.

Look no further than the Spydie Carbon-Fiber Dragonfly plain edge. PERFECT gent's folder. Beautiful little knife with elegant yet "big-feeling" and high-quality ATS-55 blade. Ultimate in functional. I was DAMN lucky to acquire one for $45 "used" but in mint condition!

I agree with Will on the Toad as a gent's knife.
Mine goes with me daily when I wear a suit.
The Toad is a bit thick, but it is also far lighter than the s/s Dragonfly, Navigator and Pegasus.
Next choice would be the carbon fiber Dragonfly. I had one once and sold it. Damn, I sure miss that one.

Personally, the little steel scaled dragon fly suits me just fine as a delicate knife for a business suit. I've used the mouse this way too, but it is heavier, and less elegant than the dragon fly.

Its nice that we feel our current small & classy spydies can function in this role, BUT . . . come on, folks, get imaginative here--COMPLETELY NEW! Imagine that you are Sal dreaming up a new knife.

New blade styles, such as wharncliffe? New lock, such as frame lock or compression lock? Coupled with what handle material--Ti (possibly with designs), polished micarta, various inlay options? Perhaps even bolsters (!)?

What turns your crank?

Carlos, I agree with you.... though no one seems to have commented on your post. I have two Solos, one of each size, and have carried the smaller one since 1993. Both have plain blades, and I consider them both "Gentleman Folders."
I understand they are, or will be, discontinued..... :-(
