If the BK&T Campanion is my idea of a near perfect knife, then

what are some knives/brands that are of a similar vein? (My opinion is based on blade size & shape, handle ergonomics, strength, price/value and even the sheath.)

One thing I would like in a different model would be G-10, micarta or carbon fiber scales.

I love the Livesay Air Assault, and would buy one in a heartbeat, but I will not go through the hassle of a mail/online order through the maker's company that I've read about from others on this board as of late.

One other model that I've run across that is somewhat similar is the Entrek Javalina--but I hear that the sheath is lacking.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I just purchased a BK&T Campanion and, so far, like it. I especially like it's drop point geometry. I find, however, that it's a little heavy and imprecise for some of the chores I've asked it to tackle. I find myself more frequently going back to my old standby... a Cold Steel SRK. The SRK, too, has a drop point configuration, is a little lighter and handier and, for me, serves the same role as the Campanion.

That RD6 looks like a great knife. I recently ordered a Little Bird from Brigade Quartermasters, and I'm waiting patiently for it to arrive. A couple of questions though--is that finish a little too much (too thick)? How is the sheath? Do you ever wish you'd gotten one of the larger ones?

Also, I've been looking at BL Goode's knives on the custom forums (specifically the Companion, Sidekick and Trailmaster, as well as the "Digger" knife he recently made.) They all look very good--I've emailed him asking about upcoming availability and pricing--if it's anywhere in my budget, I might have to pick one or two up.

Thanks!--Now I'm drooling over the RD series from Ranger knives!

One question though--the Ranger Knives RD series seems very similar to the Ontario Knives RTAK and TAK knives--are there any major differences? (Both come in similar blade lengths, handle material, shape, sheath...)

The coating seems to be as thick as other makers, so not too thick. The edge is pretty thick, but I wanted the hollow ground blade. He does make some full flat ground RD blades which have a thinner edge.

I like the sheath better than some of the other cordura/kydex lined sheaths. This one has a fastex buckle for the front pouch and extra cordura lashing points on the back for different mounting. It did seem a little oversized, but I took the kydex out and cut some off so it sits lower in the sheath(the front part of the handle sits 1" into the sheath which I kinda like).

The RD7 looks good also, but I wanted the 6" blade for this knife. I like 5" to 7" fixed blades so the RD9 did not really interest me. If I need something that big, I grab a Khukuri :D

I don't have any experience with the TAK knives. The RTAK will have a bigger handle, wider blade(I Think?), longer blade, and thinner stock(3/16") compared to the the RD9. Almost bought an RTAK, but the handle was too big for me.

Logan1--

Thanks--that's exactly the kind of info I'm looking for.

As it happens, I received my Little Bird today. The coating isn't unbearably thick, and if the quality of this little knife is what I can expect from any of the Ranger knives, I'll be ordering an RD series knife as soon as they're available again. (I think I'm going to go with the RD7).

From what I read on the website, the sheaths are Spec Ops made, so I did some reading on their site, and it looks like a good match.

Eric H,

Now that you've had the Little Bird for awhile, what are your general impressions? I'm either going to buy it or the Becker Necker. Your info. will help me make my decisison. Thanks,
