If you could have any felling axe currently produced for free, which would you pick?

I like the Council 3.5 lb Jersey but if you add in the sheath, it's almost half the cost of the Gransfors Bruks already. I'm kind of leaning towards Gransfors.

I haven't needed a full sized felling axe in a long time. I like Gransfors and Hultafors - but since I don't have a need for it, I'd be inclined to go with polished up 5160 (Council Velvicut). If I had a regular use for it....I'd debate the pros and cons of Gransfors vs Velvicut for days, if not weeks, on end. Then buy them both.

I'd take a Best Made Co. or Gransfors…. Then I'd sell it and take that $ and go hit some garage sales and flea markets and buy a dozen or more vintage heads.

uninterested in currently produced axes, full size or not.

that said, if i had to take one, it would be a council jersey.

Autine. Like my other felling axes I'd rarely to never use it, but I'd take it for free in a heartbeat.

Strike my earlier comment - I know it isn't in the right "class" (felling)...but I think I need the Autine polished hunter's axe (as long as it's free)

i refuse to buy a new production axe until someone starts selling a good aussie style axe or a 4# or greater connecticut pattern in the us for around 150 or less. is that too picky?

I'd take the Autine tools by John Neeman..I have one on order it will be here in 7 months so il have in April..a long time to wait but well worth it..I got the Polished Hunters axe it cost $350.00 plus $70.00 shipping which I think is a little much for shipping but what can I do about it? Nothing so I gotta pay it if I want one..I like Gransfors American Felling axe at $190.00 is a good price in my opinion.

My problem with Autine and Neeman is that for a similar price I can get a Tuatahi work axe. Also, the handles look all kinds of wrong to me. I've never seen/handled one though so I will reserve judgment until then. There's no denying his forging skills though.

Have never heard of the Tuatahi axes before I will have to check them out..Are they hand forged and where at?? Are they hard to obtain and long wait times?? Have you ever heard of Peter Szabo Weapon-Smith from Slovokia?? He is a top of the line Blacksmith he is second to anyone maybe better than John Neeman and he will make you any axe you want and his wait time is around 10 to 15 days to forge it then maybe a week or so for shipping..I have a Viking bearded axe on the way right now just one that he made and had it on eBay..I haven't seen an axe yet from him that I don't like they're all awesome..you should check him out on Facebook or eBay.

Commercially produced, I'd go with the Council Jersey pattern with a straight haft. Decent steel and finish. There are a ton of vintage axes I would prefer though.
