If you could only carry ONE multi-tool in the woods...

Just imagine if you were going into the woods for a week, what multi-tool would you take?

For me, I would take the Victorinox Spirit X. I am indeed a hardcore LM Charge fan, but I would rather that Spirit X. This is because:

1. It's pretty much rust proof due to the highly polished finish. (Leatherman tools WILL rust due to the bead blasted finish if they are not properly maintained).

2. The soft knife steel would be easy to sharpen compared to the 154CM/S30V blade steels on the Charge's.

3. The Spirit has an awl which could prove useful for trapping and all sorts of tasks.

4. The Spirit is a tad lighter as well..

5. I would also be carrying a fixed blade knife so one handed access to a diminutive blade isn't necessary...

I'd be very comfortable with a Spirit as long as I had a real (non-folding) knife with me. I wouldn't want to spend a week in the woods with just a folding knife of any type.

My Victorinox Huntsman has proven to be an excellent multitool during camping in the past 10 years. It provides all the tools I need in the camp and during hiking. Note that I also take a Mora with me, so the small blade size and non-locking blade of the Huntsman is not really an issue.

I would carry my Spirit X , along with a Farmer and the FB de jour .

LM Blast. If I lose it, no big deal. If it gets a little dirty, no big deal. My favorite thing about this tool is with the saw blade out and the handles partially opened, you can use it like a small hand saw. A big plus.

Same for me with the FB and a Vic Champion Plus. Saw and file and awl and the 2 blades (large & small) always are useful!

either a surge or supertool 3000, those seem like the real heavy workers at least in the leatherman line, the SOG powerassist is also pretty interesting to me, but ive never handled one so i cant really comment on that one

The SURGE would be an excellent option as well as it has one hand opening blades, an awl, an eyeglass screwdriver, and the removable saw/file means that you can touch up the plain blade with the diamond coated file.

My vote is for my SAK Spirit backed up by my Fallkniven F1

I would carry the same multi that I EDC , in a pinch familiarity is a good thing . Time was , I wouldn't have carried a plier based tool at all , but so many mechanical devices are creeping into the outdoor lifestyle .
