If you could only have one knife...

Hello all --

I'm a novice at bladeforums.com, since last week, and I'm probably about to make an ettiquette blunder. I'm not seeking to inspire flames, so, if I could be directed to the replies to my question below, or shown a better location to post it, it would be greatly appreciated.

This question has probably been asked here before, and asking it in the Buck Knife manufacturers forum will likely add a bias to replies, but, if you could only have one knife, for everything you use, or, might need a knife for, which one knife would you choose? No limits on this, fixed blade, lockback, machete...

Of course, this could just be a terribly ridiculous question to ask, so, you can let me know that, too.

I'm personally leaning towards my Buck Model 639 Fieldmate

...but I certainly don't consider myself a knife "expert." The reason I don't confine myself to owning just one knife is because I don't have to, but, if I had to, or didn't have the choice....

Thanks for your patience and replies! GeoThorn

Depends on the Area of Operations.

If no laws are an issue and survival is paramount; Strider MTL

Laws are an issue and fixed blade not applicable; Strider SMF

Just my opinion

2 is 1. 1 is none. That said, Iwould chose the 110. Its big enough to butcher deer, thin enough to clean fish, strong enough to do many chores around camp and home and its accepted in public.

Josh,

I can understand the MTL.
But no plain edge SBT????

If I am limited to one, I will have to choose my SMF (which is the industrial sized Plain Edge SBT).

Once the G10 SBTs are done though, it may be a tougher decision. (by the way, going to do some in Coyote Brown)

answer subject to change at any time.

I keep a soldier model SAK in my breifcase always so that might be a more honest answer.

Buck 110 for sure! Don't think I will get bored of it anytime soon.

Another vote for the SMF.

The lower-price Tarani Plain Edge is an acceptible alternate.

The 110 has been my favorite knife for along time and if I could only have one that is what I would pick. The 112fg is a close second and might evan crowd the 110 out of first place one of these days.

i just acquired a 112 fg. I think it has replaced my 110 as my favorite. Great size! The 110 tends to get a little bulky on my belt, but the 112 fg is perfect yet still has great cutting power, for me anyway.

I've carried a few different 110s and 110fgs (serrated, and plain), but I gotta say my favorite is still the 426. Same blade as the 110, with the lightweight plastic handle, just not as pretty as the 110. If they still made it, I'd want the 426 with a partially serrated blade. I cut a lot of polypropelyne line, and the serrations would come in handy. For me though, function is more important than form. The weight difference it what really sells me on the 426.
