From various videos and forums I had been put under the impression that the BK14 needed to be modified to throw sparks. But I was just pondering this minor but annoying disadvantage to the knife while admiring the blade in my hands a few moments ago. I said to myself "Well, I could always use the sharpened blade edge to throw sparks in a pinch" and then my eyes noticed for the millionth time the little semi-circle indentation between the start of the blade and the handle and I was struck by a possibility.
"No way", I thought, "It couldn't have been there all the time."
I heard countless people with more knife knowledge than me say the BK14 needed to be modified to throw sparks or you would otherwise have to use the sharpened edge.
I got out my fire steel and, after a few false starts, the knife was throwing huge sparks!
Just thought I'd post this for anyone who didn't know you do NOT have to modify the BK14 to throw sparks.
