If you had to choose a 710...

Which steel/blade configuration would you prefer in a BM 710:
A) Satin D2 plain edge
B) M2 partial serrated

Knowing how the majority seem to feel concerning serrations, I was curious to know which you would go with if given these two choices...

I don't like serrations. The only serrations I'll ever need are on the 2nd blade of my Leatherman Wave.

In a heartbeat, any M2, with or without serrations ... gotta try it to know why. Holds a scalpel sharp edge a very long time and is easy to bring back if it hasn't blunted.

While I love M2, I really hate serrations, D2. Mine holds an edge pretty well, what little it gets used, man I hate these laws. Steven

D2 plain edge for me. I have never tried a knife with M2 so I can't give an opinion on it. But from my experience with D2, I really like it. I also dont really like combo edges.

I don't like part serrated blades.
D2 is great steel - it's not quite M2, obviously, but it is great steel.

So I'd pick the D2 PE.

(In fact, mine is sitting here on the table right in front of me -
great knife.)

D2 plain edge over M2 combo. Pretty much plain edge anything over anything combo. My 910 is combo edge and I always wish it were plain.

If I had to choose...
I think I might not be able to tell the difference in edge retention performance between D2 and M2. D2 is almost stainless though so that would be a plus in a folder that is going to go in my pocket. And I prefer plain edge over combo edge. I don't cut a lot of cordage. The amount that I do cut is easily handled by a sharp plain edge. I've tried combo edges and they don't really do well for me.

If it were I, I would choose the D2 plain edge.

I have a couple of full size griptilians, one is D2 and one is M2, both plain edge. I am highly biased towards a plain edge. I've found that the D2 and M2 blades are pretty close in actual use and I really like both. If I were making the decision you are, I would go with the D2 plain edge and never look back. Both are truly great blade steels, you must decide if you prefer serrations or not.

It might depend on the price for the M2HSSR. If it's not too bad, even though I hate serrations, I might go that way. 85%+ of my cutting is on the part that's unserrated anyway...YMMV.

Thanks for the replies, your opinions are valued. I did manage to pick up a user HSSR for a very reasonable price, its a horse of a knife! Also have one in D2, it may well be my sharpening abilities, but I can get a wicked edge on the M2 that I just can't seem to get with D2; Both are sharpened identically on a sharpmaker. Have a couple other plain edge M2's and for me it's a steel I will grab with or without serrations- I would probably prefer without but an M2 710 in any flavor is a keeper anytime.

I like M2 over D2, but I like plain edge over combo edge more.

I’d take the D2 plain edge.

If your D2 knife is not sharpening as well as your M2 knife, you may want to check to see if your D2 blade angle matches the angle on the sharpening stone, especially if the D2 is not raising a burr. Use a magic marker on the blade edge and do a dry pass with the stone at your sharpening angle. That trick will tell you whether the issue is the sharpening angle or the steel. D2 should get plenty sharp.

I currently own a 710 in D2/PE:) I've found it a bit finicky to sharpen, but then I haven't had to sharpen it that much either:D It's one of the few larger blades I carry on me. Most of them get parked in Maxpedition Jumbo. Can't venture opinion on M2 - don't own anything in M2. For me, I feel that on a 710, a CE would probably function quite well because you would have enough of both. I have a couple of Spydie Enduras and they work fine. Generally, I'm not a CE type per se, but I do use them on occasion.

I don't like serrated blades and the reverse curve of the 710 is a positive for the almost four inch blade length and will aid in cutting virtually anything a serrated will cut.

I have the M2 version and it sharpens and holds an excellent edge. If you need a 710 'soon', I'd opt for the D2.

Then keep looking around for an M2 version. You might luck out and find one. ;)

Between the two...
The steel matters less to me than the serrations.
I prefer non-serrated.
