Well I just got my first UKPK in the mail and it is so damn stiff I am actually thinking of returning it is so bad, I see people opening them with one hand, and I also heard other people say it is " a little stiff " but for the life of me I cant open it one handed with ease. I feel like I am applying so much pressure with my thumb when opening that it is going to snap off lol. Should I return it?

I guess I just want to know if that is a normal occurrence when you first buy this knife, I know the fact it is a slip joint may make it more difficult to open but this is ridiculous, maybe it needs to be oiled. I pretty much have to re apply pressure with my thumb 5 times to get it fully opened.

If they will swap I would do that.
I've had the FRN version, and still have my G10 version, and neither is hard to open at all. A bit more stiff than a locking knife of course, but nothing like what you explain.

Thanks yeah it is actually impossible to open with one hand with the amount of force it requires.

I have 3 of the Ti UKPK's and they are not that stiff. Easily open one handed, but I have heard the springs in the Ti versions are not as strong as the G10 version. I'd return it if you can't get it opened with one hand.

:grumpy: Thanks for the replies, since I actually went through a person through a store instead of a store direct it may be more difficult, I'm going to be sticking with knifecenter and amazon direct from now on.

Huh, yeah -- if you can't open it with one hand then you should definitely return it. A slippie should be stiffer than, say, a liner lock, but definitely not "impossible to open with one hand". They should fix it or swap you out.

I also had a problem with my UKPK. I had the G-10 version and opening it with one hand was a small challenge from closed to half-stop position. From half-stop to open was fine. However my issue was the ease of closing the blade. If I barely pushed on the thumb ramp without actually cutting something, it would close on me. It was very difficult to keep the blade in the open position with any pressure on the spine.

Just call Spyderco. You may have to pay postage, but I'm sure they'll take care of you. Or is it one of the discontinued variations? Either way, I'd call.

no problems with mine but i know i read somewhere that the newer versions of the ukpk have a much more solid lock up. more then 20lbs resistance, which makes for a pretty solid non locking knife!!

Yeah I love it just not my purchase so much lol. I didn't go with knife center but I should have. Even Amazon direct is pretty ghetto.. expect to buy " new " product that has been opened or returned previously by other customers then just shoved back into the selling department. I am sort of tired of this I won't be buying from Amazon or any of Amazon sellers unless the deal is ridiculous because even my box has a rip in it while maybe it is from it being sent, it just looks like someone else got it before me opened it carelessly and then returned it because it probably had the same problem it does now. So I got stuck with it because it was the only one left in stock now lol. And stuff like that bothers me.

I have a couple of UKPKs and they are pretty neat. And they both open just right. You might try adjusting the pivot to that perfect sweet spot (ease of opening and little or no blade play), and then loctite it in place.

This user was pretty nasty when I got it, but cleaned up real nice.

It will get easier..Mine was real stiff as well...nowhere near the ease and smoothness of my urban.

I have been playing around with it and it has eased up some but still ridiculous, from the sounds of it i think i should be getting a refund. The shipping was free anyway so I don't care about that. I'll be buying from knifecenter from now on in hopes that I won't ever get an already opened package again.

Ha, I had the opposite. My UKPK was super easy and smooth, but the Urban was uncomfortably stiff.

I have one of the G10 versions and it was very stiff. I've used it a lot and it's lightened up some, but is still very stiff.

I have an older G-10 UKPK and it was thumb flickable out of the box. Try adjusting the pivot. It might have left the factory that way on purpose since it was designed to comply with knife laws in another country. Or it was just over tightened.
