No photos here just a short story and perhaps a lifelong reminder for myself:

We tend to at time get a little bit careless when it comes to our dangerous tools, ie, guns and knives.. ND, AD, and of course the nicks, bumps, bruises we endure along the way..

Well last March I experienced something that is still with me today..

We had our last bite of winter in mid March, it snowed a little the night before so I decided to make a fire.. the wood was wet so I had to process a bit to get to the dry. I was using an old Sharp survival knife 6" blade hair shaving sharp also on the tip of the spine.

I was showing my kids how to baton with a knife, while I was doing so I was thinking (hey stupid get your gloves) but I only needed a little more kindling..

so at one point I was making pencil sized sticks, and had the brilliant idea to use my hand to help guide then knife along the way, well I ended up putting that deadly tip right into my right hand ring finger at the palm, (didn't bleed and didn't feel a thing)..

until the next day, apparently I punctured the tendon.. It has been hell since then and until last month I haven't really been much use with a knife.. For months I could barely bend my finger, and until recently able to make a fist again..

I still feel pain in the finger adn were at the end of July.. Still cant fully extend it.. A constant reminder of SAFETY FIRST, hopefully I have served as a constant reminder of safety for my Kids...... (as i said that's the wrong way to process wood)

I'm sharing this story as everyday I use my knives I think of what a simple little process and a minor cut has done to the mobility of my finger..

Be Safe::

Did you get medical attention/surgery to repair? My understanding is that tendonm injures have a limited window of time to to get repaired. With out that, you risk irreversible permanent loss of function.

unfortunately no..

This cut was a slightly larger then 1/8" wide but obviously was deep. So I thought it wasn't a big deal, but after about a week or so I finally went to the doctor. Without an MRI he suggested it was merely punctured and would just take a lot of time to heal, as I said its been 4 months now and I have much more mobility yet it I can still feel my finger (slight pain)..

So I guess I'm lucky as I didn't severe it..

yeah, i sliced right through a tendon on my index finger and ran straight to the ER to get it fixed. outside of some soreness, i'm good as new.

I have a similar story to remember knife safety.
I was at a friends playing with his new Spear Point M21 plain edge. The knife is advertised with a "razor edge" and it is very sharp. The blade is also reasonably heavy and smooth opening.
I'm a lefty and sometimes closing a liner lock one handed is a trick especially with the CRKT "Auto LAWKS". :grumpy:
Well on this occasion instead of using my fore finger on the back of the blade to close it, I used gravity and gave it a "wave". The blade closed and the "Carson Flipper" missed my thumb tip where it normally stops. The knuckle below the thumb nail caught it and the blade split me wide open!!!
I bled a lot and probably should have got it looked at by a doc but I figured it'd be fine.
Six months later it hurts to bend my thumb at that knuckle.
Now when I close a folder I use TWO hands and have taught my son the same practice!!! ;)
I wonder if I'll be able to close the lefty HEST/F one handed?

Yep, on Christmas day I was sharpening a knife and sliced my finger. I guess the 3 scotchs' had something to do with it.
One trip to the ER and 4 stitches, I was on my way back home.

BTW - scotch can be used as a antiseptic - I never did get an infection, but I took it internally.

Back in 1990 or so, I managed to put a nice bevel on my left index finger and thumb with my Randall Model 16 while doing something stupid. I'll see if I can't get a picture of them to post.

I'm much more careful with knives now. :)

Haha, its so true man. Even when we know how to be safe, and know what NOT to do with our knives, it takes one dumb idea to get ourselves hurt.

Hope everything heals up ok though! :)

I cut my right hand 3 times today. A buddy of mine got a sog peI and on the first day cut his right twice and left hand once.

I know that feeling. I played with my Spyderco Tenacious and tried to get it open tacticool, I sliced into my thumb badle and deeply. My blade was hair whittling sharp and wound closed by itself without need of stitches. Luckily nail prevented going it further or it would have sunked into bone...

My years in scouts I've seen many nice little cuts and slices from kids playing with new knives. You'd think we'd have known better, but it was great first aid practice :)

When I was a kid, I was out playing with one of my pops' big ass folders swinging it at some tall weeds next to the garage with my right hand, wasn't paying attention to where my left hand was at.

One final swing and when the blade finished slicing through the weeds my follow through planted the tip of it firmly into the top side of my left hand! Deep! Right to the bone! lol Pops got the bleeding stopped and slapped a butterfly on it and told me to stop being a dumb ass! :D

I learned my lesson that day! Still ended up with plenty of other smaller cuts but nothing quite like that one!

i've cut my tendon with my izula almost a year ago, had surgery on it and i cant close that finger completely like my others.
I'm 17 at the moment and i really love it that we have to have a medical insurance in Europe :)

I know what your feeling with the finger ;)
