If you thought identifying the Sandbar Bowie knife was hard ... How about the JTR knife!

I came across an old blog discussion of the knife (ives) used by Jack the Ripper in his infamous crimes. I found some of the commentary interesting and much of it weak on knife lore. I am posting it here in the hope that we can do better.

There is a recent book published by someone who claims to be Jack the Rippers Great -Great grand nephew, who believes he has found his ancestor's murder weapon. I think we are used to this kind of nonsense from original bowie knife claimants. Lets dig in and see what we come up with. Can we get closer to solving this shocking Victorian horror story?

Here is the original blog discussion form 2012:

So go put on your best Sherlock Homes attire, grab your pipe and magnifying lens and join in the fun.

May I substitute a bong for the pipe?

Seems kind of morbid. I’m not judging. Just an observation.

Those women were all someone’s daughters. I’d like to see a real investigation, but I won’t “join in the fun”
Yes, it is morbid; but what makes the story news worthy, over a century later is that the mystery remains unsolved. Jack the Ripper and his victims are long gone. But the story continues to be as shocking and mysterious as always. Perhaps a well to do Jack the Ripper acquired James Bowie's original knife for these crimes .

Still when you read through the blog and hear people say that a folding knife is too delicate for dissection or that a longer knife would break against the pavement, clearly we know that is not true. So lets try to do better. This happened in 1888, long before DNA or finger prints, during the early days of professional crime fighting.

I don’t mind the investigation or the morbidity of it. If done with respect.

It was the “join in the fun” part of your post that I think soured me.

Just caught me at a bad time. Nothing against you not2sharp not2sharp
