If you were going to Bolivia . . .

My little brother is going to Bolivia with the Peace Corps to do "conservation" work, but no one knows exactly what that will consist of. I want to get him an appropriate tool, either a good knife or a multi-tool. I'm looking for input on these three options:

- Spydie Baby Goddard liteweight - type knife
or
- Leatherman Wave
or
- Victorknox Swisstool

Does anyone have either multitool, and what do they think about performance and durability? It needs to last 2 years. All insights greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Fish:

Have you read the multi-tool reviews at www.equipped.com ?

Have you tried using the search feature? I and others have written a lot on the relative merits of the SwissTool vs. Wave.

I prefer the SwissTool over the Wave, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the locking tools, greater strength (I believe), and tool selection. That's just me, though; lots of people favor the Wave.

Are you sure you want to buy your brother such a tiny knife? "Never carry a knife shorter than your schnoz"--that's what I always say.

I would want something that if I lost it, no big deal. I might would go with the original Leatherman, and buy two. Also two knives(One plain edge, the other serrated.) and two Photons. Thats just me, I like to have a back-up for my back-up.

Was there this past summer on a humanitarian misson (building stuff/drilling wells) A good multi type tool was very handy, as well a 5" clip point utility that always rides on my ruck.

A good pocket folder in this type country gets a ton of use - the Spyderco Military in plain edge is one of the best work blades I've used for this. Doesn't gum up like others I've used, seems to stay sharp forever, operates good with gloves on, and rides high enough in the pocket for easy access and even makes the piece feel smaller when carrying.

I also second the suggestion of a multi-tool, but overall the folder will probably see more use.

If he's going to do 'community' type work then he won't need a large blade or machete because the locals will probably have an abundance of these. - Jeff

A multi tool would be essential as it could be very helpful for quick/ unexpected repairs. I would prefer to carry a small/ medium fix blade (3.4- 5") as it can take a bit more abuse than a folder such as when light prying and digging might be necessary. It is also more maintenance friendly. Circumstances dictating, I would carry a folder also, in the way of a Spyderco Tim Wegner model. As mentioned, the locals will probably have big blades on hand if they' re needed.
