By a top maker, 6-7 inch blade, strong double guard, stag handle, with metal hilt... what maker, and model, would you pick. Oh, and it must have a very good leather sheath.

I'm talking in the class of Randall, Al Mar, or such. And please.. nothing made in China! Vintage.. real good make knife.

Randall, GW Stone, Ralph Bone, Robert Hayes of California, Kent, Bart, or Harvey Draper. Gil Hibben's real custom models are very nice. Greg Covington of Ohio is current maker that does well in vintage styles. Steve Voorhis does nice vintage styles at moderate prices.

There are a lot of ways you can go with this.

I tend to think that if you're looking for "vintage" and "stag handle" that pretty much eliminates "Made in China" anyway.

Take a look at Phillip Patton. He does stellar work. And his prices are better than production Randals.

His fit, finish, grinds, everything are just stellar. He uses many different steels. You can get forged or stock removal from him.

As much as I love stag I don’t like it on a fighting knife.

Can you give us another hint? There are literally hundreds of thousands of makers that fit your description. Tell us how much you would like to spend; what period of vintage are you interested in; what condition should this knife be in; are you looking for factory, mid-tech or custom; what country of origin would you prefer?

Randall would be a good start

If I were in the market for such (which I ain't) , A Western W48, Buck 124, or Marbles Ideal, or possibly a large Hudson Bay pattern from the 1700's and 1800's.
Without the guard, a 6 inch Russell Green River or Old Hickory "Buffalo Skinner", or "Sheath Knife", or maybe a vintage Finnish made Pukkoo with 3 or 4 inch blade?

Not custom or high end knives, or in your price range by a long shot. However, I don't have the funds for a high end/custom/near custom knife.

I'm not going to war, nor am I going out to stick a angry wild/ferral pig/boar with my knife to get ham (or ribs) for supper.
For my needs, a 3.5 to 5 inch blade is plenty "big". :D

Riverside Knife Co. in Croydon, New Hampshire. It's more of a butcher knife, really - wooden handle, 3 rivets, 6" carbon steel blade. Hilt is possibly silver, no sheath. But it's vintage all right, made before the Civil War. It's the oldest knife specimen my GF owns, found while cleaning out the old homestead. I'm amazed there's still an inch of blade width on it. Wish I knew how to post a picture.

If I had to pick one the top ones, Ed Fowler definitely. Or a Randall. Is this just for fun? If you really want one, where you could possibly afford it, and still use it rather than just an investment, I like something from Mike Mann of Idaho Knife Works, Matt Lesniewski of ML Knives or I have found RW Fredd makes quality work, usually find his stuff on the other bushcraft site. RW usually makes them from old files. Just something to think about.
