if you were left with one custom folder...

Hello all!

If you were Tom Hanks in Castaway and instead of the box with the ice-skates there was a box with the one custom folder that happened to be your choice... what would it be?

Background: I followed the EDC pocket dump thread for years and now I don't know where it is :( . Somewhere in there was a custom simple folder with sort of a drop point blade that I really liked and not too crazy on the price, about 200 usd I think.. Real descriptive, I know.. So, I thought this would be a great excuse to post your single absolute most favorite custom folder! Alright.. one that you own and one that you must have..

The one that I must have if I can't find that knife from the thread I mentioned... strangely enough a Dalton dragon but with Damascus blade.

My Andrew Demko Custom American Lawman is #1 followed by my Alan Davis Custom folder he made for me to my specs that I edc! Kevin :D

AD-10 CPM-M4 with every single little part dlc coated.

:D

For me it would be any of the GTC lineup. All his knives really are just amazing.

i dont own one but the grayman satu looks like it would fit the bill well.

this John W. Smith unit is a keeper. Completely non corroding, with Stellite 6K that cuts and cuts. No plastic, 'cept the resin used to hold the carbon fiber and the micarta backspacer together;

I have just a few custom folders, and the reason why is this one. Since I got it, I just don't have much desire to accumulate more. Perfect knife for me, (I admit, I'm a materials junkie at heart).

now before anyone gets any sand in their pivot, Kevin makes a good point...
:D

I would love to see the Davis- I now have 3 of his knives and the big folder in stag may be on that list (it is still pretty new), or my Elishewitz Kaiser in Damasteel and G10/Micarta/Carbon Fiber, or my STR BUSSTR in red micarta

Kevin makes an excellent point. A fixed blade is the knife of choice.

Mostly these threads are "what is your favorite" folder.

Given the "castaway" scenario...who would want a Damascus blade?

Next, the thread said what one "folder" Cuts like a Kris listed (I believe every knife he owns) :D...to include several factory knives.

Please read the scenario.

Remember unless you have the ability to keep your folder clean (did you remember to bring your tools for dis-assembly/assembly?). Your folder will eventually turn into a fixed blade. Given the lack of sheeple that should be a problem...unless you can't find something to make into a sheath for it.

Also, no need for an overbuilt knife as the pivot pin will swedge long before even a properly 1/8" heat tread blade will bend or break.

The good thing is you weren't planning on using this folder for any pounding, chopping, hacking or prying. :D After all who would need that in a survival situation.

If you watch any of the survival shows you will note they are either using a multi-tool or fixed blade.

Now back to your "this is my favorite folder" thread.

My favorite for this situation would be a Walter Brend 8 1/2" Model 2 (D-2) or an RJ Martin Vanguard Pathfinder with a 10" blade in 3V.

Hey Cuts Like a Kris can put up a fixed blade! LOL

Nice Les- I actually listed 3 custom folders that I would have to choose from, but seeing as I only have group pics those are what I posted. Good to see you read what I wrote. Hope the dump you took on the thread felt good.

HI CLAK,

A couple of things.

Yes, you posted photos of fixed blades.

Yes, you posted photos of factory knives.

Yes, apparently you didn't read the initial post (apparently two of us can't read). You listed three folders you would take....the thread specifically asks for 1 custom folder.

No, I didn't take a dump on the thread. Just being realistic.

NOTE...lots of posts with nothing more than...This knife!

Ok, why would you take that folder into a survival situation?

Perhaps that should have been in the initial post. After all you are talking about this knife possibly saving your life.

If it is all you have then they are better than nothing. However, if you have a choice...anyone with any real world experience would choose a fixed blade over a folder.

Lastly, just for grins you guys should go to the field and try to make a shelter with a folder.

HI Stabber,

Careful, CLAK will be along shortly to tell you that you didn't read the thread and are dumping on it.

CUSTOM KNIFE STABBER....SAKs are not Custom Knives!

Come on man! :D

BTW, one of my favorite shows. I wonder how many SAKs were sold because of that show. SAK Should have come out with the McGuyver model.

Wow Les, jackass much? If you don't like the premise of the thread then feel free to stay out and give your opinion where it is wanted. You are being a jerk to be a jerk, something I have noticed you get great pleasure from and seem to think is your right for some reason, and seeing as you went after me for posting pictures let's go. If you would actually read what I wrote (not just looked through the pretty pictures) then you might not have pissed me off as much.

Hey bucko, I have spent many nights outdoors, and for shits and giggles have made shelters from folders- I actually have used a CRKT Apache (not a custom but you called me out on it) to do all of my cutting tasks for a weekend, and it worked wonderfully. Something our ancestors learned in the Paleolithic period is you use tools within their scope to manufacture other tools you need. Why dig with a folder when a digging stick is much more suited for the job. Survival doesn't need to be bear grylls/Rambo to be effective. I have split logs with a folder as the only cutting implement, it's called making a baton and wedges!

You asked why I would choose between the three I said I would select from (I'm not the one that needs reading comprehension lessons- I clearly stated I would have to choose "A" OR "B" OR "C").
I have used the BUSSTR fairly extensively in camping/bush settings. It has a solid lock up, decently strong handle and a great thin, slicing blade. It's blade shape works for all tasks I have tried, keeping within it's niche as a slicer.
The Elishewitz is made of tough materials, the damasteel blade won't corrode and holds a very good edge and resharpens well. I have EDC'd it almost as much as the BUSSTR and it has never let me down, best lock up of any folder I own.
As I said in my post, I'm not sure if the stag handles Davis folder would be chosen due to me not completely trying it out yet, but it has a filling, solid handle with great retention, it carries very well in khaki's despite it's full handles. The Damascus is made from quality steels so performance is no an issue, it is a very solid lockup, and hand fatigue under more stressful cuts wouldn't be as much of an issue with this knife.

I don't make statements on threads like this unless I feel I have something constructive to add- have you done the same? You came in and ripped the premise (in which the OP clearly stated was an excuse to post your favorite folder), ripped my post and contributed nothing positive toward the thread. I for one am sick and tired of your perceived sence of superiority and haughtiness in your posts. You come across as an arrogant jerk and now that you have chosen to shit in my cornflakes this morning before I even had milk (milk then mix is important- keeps streaks off of the side) I feel like responding. You act like you are an all-important know-it-all when you are a nobody in the grand scheme of things, just like the rest of us. I decided long ago that your attitude meant you are somebody that I wish to do nothing with.

On another note- I do not appreciate you putting words in my mouth! I am a big boy and can speak for myself, thanks.

Sorry for the derail OP, I'm done with him now. I thought the thread would be a great idea to get user custom folders talked about and possibly some pics up.

The biggest toughest one I could find. Not the type of customs I like, but if If it one one EDC Custom that I own it would be my DDR Trigger

Wow, a bit of drama going on in this thread.. I was hoping for more pictures!

I definitely believe folders have their place in rough out and about use, and I prefer them to fixed as I like all things mechanical. Plus they're smaller... and entertaining to flick when you're in the middle of nowhere. A friend of mine spent months in the bush in DR Congo (amongst many other dodgy places in the world) and he took with him a CRKT m16 tanto; swears by it.
