If you were to take a week long canoe trip, which knives would you take?

I think I would take two light and fairly inexpensive folders, an Endura and a Delica for backup.

I would wear my Izula most of the time and bring a BK7 for chopping.

Depending on where I was going, the Becker might stay at home...

Ideally, something bright orange and with a lanyard. Probably a fixed blade for safety and food hygiene.

If you have to portage, the lighter the better.

my cold steel bolo machete or ESEE Junglas,ESEE 6P and orange cord wrapped Izula, wire saw.I live on Lake Hartwell(SC) and do 3 day canoe trips frequently, just hitting the islands and camping. When packing I grab a chopper(machete for small islands close to shore where everybody camps or junglas for big islands or ones not frequently visited) batoning blade(6p or something similar) small fixed blade/necker(almost always an Izula) and always have a military wire saw in the kit.

Depending on location and activities anything from an F1 and SAK to Recon Scout and small fillet knife.

Here in Wisconsin I'd take a chopper(or two) for sure, either my BRT custom or my Mcnees chopper, my MD Caldwell 1-5, my BK11 around my neck and either a SOG Flash II or Spydie Tenacious in my pocket.

For a week on a canoe here in FL, I would bring a cheap machete for heavy work and brush clearing and a couple of moras for the finer work along with ezelap diamonds. If the river gods strike,my higher end blades are safe at home.

Axe, 4"-5" hunter (I prefer the Loveless design, probably by Hartman or Davis), slipjoint in the pocket. I've done a fair number of trips up to a week long with that assortment.

Will this be a trip where you go to a single spot and stay there for a few days, or will you be moving from place to place every day? Also, will there be portaging?

I think I would bring a folding saw, BK9, Mora Clipper (or BK11), and a multitool.

The saw and the BK9 will take care of any heavy work while still being pretty easy to pack, the mora for any carving and food prep (super light weight), and the multitool for repairing little gizmos and whatsits and for anything else I can think of.

Canoes are tippy and they make me nervous.

I would want a good knife that I could still replace easily and inexpensively. With that in mind, I think most Walmarts carry the Buck 119 and the SOG Seal Pup. Either of those would be my choice depending on tastes or mood at time of purchase.

I've done several multi day river trips. I typically take a folder, a fixed & a small sharpener. Sebenza/SmF & CRK Nyala/Strider MFS/ESEE-3.

The last canoe trip I took was just an overnighter. I took my Busse BAD on my belt in kydex, with a pistol retention lanyard attached (blackhawk).

In my pack was my Busse Sarsquatch. Next trip will be my B11 and CABS (just got some more BB kydex sheaths for them). I make my own leather sheaths, but did not want to take leather on a 2 day canoe trip where there was a probability of swamping.

I'd probably take a stainless Mora and an Ontario Machete for camp tasks. I'd have to have my leatherman but I don't consider that a knife.

I went for a week up in the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota and I had three knives on me. BM Snody activator-1 an opinel No. 6 and a leatherman wave. I really never felt like I needed anything bigger. A folding saw would have been nice at a few points, but I managed to get along just fine

That's where I'm going this summer! :D

Last time, I just took my Wave and a CRKT neck peck (this was before I was into knives), and my older brothers used a hatchet for all the firewood. This time I imagine I'll be in charge of all that. lol

For those of you who carry expensive knives, aren't you a bit nervous around water? My brother lost his SS Dragonfly last time we went.
