This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending two days of firearms training presented by the Chief Instructor of Illinois Firearm Safety Academy, Andy Moon. On Saturday our class participated in the NRA Basic Pistol class, covering all of the most important basics such as safety, safety, types of handguns, safety, aiming, grip and safety. Did I mention safety? In all seriousness, Andy made this a theme throughout both days. This kind of instruction is invaluable to both the novice and experienced shooter as it prepares the novice to safely experience shooting and helps to ensure that the more experienced shooter remains safe and accident free. At the end of a long day in class, we took a written test on the information presented and the entire class passed with flying colors.

The second day was our Concealed Carry instruction, and safety remained a constant theme. We learned about the laws regarding carry, use of force and even were able to practice some draws using laser training pistols that Andy had on hand. There are a lot of laws (23 types of places it is illegal to carry, etc.) and specific restrictions that you have to understand. The presentation of the information and concepts, as well as real-world examples applied in different situations, helped the class to digest everything and understand as there was another written test that everyone was able to pass. Our second class ended at the range where we had to qualify and demonstrate our skills. It was a blast and the class all shot well, achieving the required scores.

It was a great time and I absolutely enjoyed the entire weekend. Even though I have been shooting for a while, I am far from an expert and I learned quite a few things as well as honing some basic skills. Andy truly did an awesome job. He is very knowledgeable and also an excellent teacher. The class had fun and stayed engaged the entire time, which is a credit to his teaching and presentation skills. I would recommend his classes to anyone without hesitation.

Oh, and Mr. Moon...I am keeping it pointed in a safe direction, my finger is off the trigger, I am checking to make sure it is unloaded...would you verify this for me? :)

Check Buddy, that is clear!

Thanks for coming down, and thanks for the review!

I hope some more of the JK Supporters can make it down for the class.

Come down anytime!

Thanks for the report, Sean.

I have been thinking of taking Andy's class. One of these days...

I give the JK Supporters a great price. ;^)

I do not advertise, I am just in this so people can get their CCL with a minimum of expense.

Living in Illinois that is not easy....

 thanks for the hardwork and awesomeness

It really is a lot of work for Andy to put on these classes as I saw firsthand. The fact that he charges literally less than half the going rate is a testament to the fact that he is doing this more for his students than his own pocketbook.

M&P 9 with a SERPA. I put about 100 rounds through it at class. I really like the M&P platform.

The laser trainers are Glock frames and we did drills out of the SERPA.

I also got to try Andy's Kimber and the .500.

Just wondering, what gun and holster setup did you use?

There is no requirement to fire while drawing from a holster, and I NEVER allow basic students to draw a loaded handgun from a holster.

We do everything from hand, and I have the SIRT laser pistols for draw from holster requirements.

I have a nice selection of pistols for students to select from if they want to use one of my firearms, and if you have your own holster and know what you will be carrying I will show you how to drill / practice with your setup. That said, only a very small percentage of students know what they will carry and have their concealment rig(s) at the time they take the class.

Sounds like a good idea. I just thought I had read someplace that you had to bring a holster suitable for concealment to the classes, probably just imagined it.

The instructor can require anything they want - and many do.

I lean toward following the specification; I don't want people to have to do things that are not required in order to buy their 2nd amendment right back from the state.

Some instructors in this area (downstate) are requiring students to shoot more than the 30 rounds, and scoring the targets NRA style.
