I like the look of chainsaw blade Damascus. Can you guys offer any tips and hints for doing this? I'd like to consider trying this in a can with 1084 powder, do I Just coil up the chain as tighly as possible, pack it into a square tube along with the powder? Also, do you ever fold the billet, or just draw out one time? If anyone has some more photos, I'd sure like to see them. This goes for motorcycle type chain also.

Rob: I have done MC chain in a can and out of the can, but in the can is easier to do, as well as chainsaw. I did chainsaw length wise in the canister and slip pieces of 1095 and nickel between the layers as I was building it up. You can stack the chain in it anyway you want. I thought this would show more of the link. Next time I do one I am going to try a 2" outside canister and a 1" innner I plan on putting chainsaw in the outer compartment with 1084 powder line the inner with nickle and 1095 then fill up the center with 4600/1084 powder. Like Bruce Bump told me when doing canisters when you think it is hot enough go have another cigarette or beer, then press it. :D I never folded it just drew it out.
PS: I’ll be sending out your chain next week. I think I have a box that will hold the 60#+ of chain.

There is a bike chain tutorial going on now over at CKD. It uses, I think, W1 sandwiched in between as the edge steel.

Ok, thanks IG, Raymond and RL, thanks also, I've seen those tutorials, but I'm shooting for doing these in cans, I like that method. Will start some experimenting this week!

I might give the can a go for some chain and chainsaw....from what I've seen and been told though, is that chain, chainsaw, and cable need a little hammering to shock them shut rather than just using a press.

Ron Claiborne and I did a billet of cable that started as 4 bundles of 1.25" cable and after the weld and draw, we gave it a run under his Little Giant. He said that these materials need the harmonics of a hammer to help close them shut....be it either a power hammer or hand held.

Greg: When I do cable. I weld with lite hammer blows and when it tightens up, thats when it goes into a press. :D

Rob: Don't forget to spray some WD-40 into that sucker. :D

IG, Will do! Now, if I can just figure out how to stuff a anchor chain link into a really big can, dump in about 2 gal of 1084, and go to town!

Greg, did you guys take a picture of the finished piece? I saw the picture of the 4 pieces of cable heading for the forge, was wondering what it came out looking like?
