This was done during a camping trip to play with some new gear and practice skills. I wanted to ignite my Emberlit stove using traditional methods. Took my new knife which throws a good spark off the spine. I also had some charred punkwood from the previous trip. That was it for the fire kit.

The knife:

To make this work I needed a few things found around camp. A hard stone to toss sparks off the carbon steel. In this case quartz. I smashed up this to get smaller rocks with sharp edges.

Yellow bark to catch the flame from the dried grass used within the tinder bundle. I also gathered some punkwood for a coal extender and to replenish my char.

Success.

Here is the video of the process.

Thanks for watching.

Woods Walker - Great video - Thanks for sharing! Did you make the char cloth?

DavidZ.

Thanks. That wasn't charcoth, it was the last of my charred cedar bark from an on going fire chain.

Cedar bark.

One on the left is charred cedar bark, on the right charred punk wood.

After this outing I am fully stocked with charred punkwood to keep the chain going.

Here is the start to the fire chain last winter. I hope to keep it going for a year. IMHO it is a great ways to practice firecraft because if something goes wrong the chain will die.
