I live in the Pacific Northwest. Can someone suggest a steel supplier in my area?
I'd also like to get suggestions about what sort of steel to use for some stock removal blade projects I want to do. I'm looking for something that doesn't require a lot of
fussing with as far as heat treatment is concerned. I'd like to try to do my own heat treatment but I'd be interested in knowing if there are any shops in my area that could do the job for me if I chicken out.
Thanks!

Frank, where in the PNW? You can get used to mail or UPS service for steel. A bunch of us in this neck of the woods have reached the conclusion there is no steel here unless your interested in rusty files or old two-man cross sut saw blades (L-6). You can work that material cold, it will go through alot of belts.

If you want good production steel, order out, there are alot of good sources. Heat treating is likely also a send off adventure. Paul Bos is the fellow you want there. Explore some of the threads on this site and you will find lots of options. Terry

Frank22,Use 1095 or O-1.You can get it most anywhere, its cheap,it works easily, and can be heat treated with a torch with good results.Dave

If you have an auto shop which specializes in suspension/leaf springs, get some 5160 from them. Or, go to the junk yard and get some leaf springs. Heat treats like 1095.

Can't remember the name, but know there is a heat treat outfit in Kent, used by at least one knifemaker, name also forgotten.

I know Bos is considered the best, but local might be cheaper.

I've gotten a lot of steel from Pacific Steel:

Joe Backus is the best guy to help you, but he is hard to get a hold
of as he is outside sales. Dave can also help.
