I don't know if I am the last one to find out about this free app for smart phones, but

I found out about it on YouTube (Check the applications icon)

Anyway, can anyone using it explain how to reorient the bubble gauge so it is aligned parallel with the longer side of the phone (horizontal)

Mine is across the narrow side (vertical)

Does that make sense?

Or am I just an old dog ignorant about electronic gizmos?

BTW - I did purchase the application for 1.99 to see if that would help, but for free, its
a great tool

Thanks

Checking an angle of propped up sharpening stone, ceramic rod/sticks angles, etc.
I think the people here would be very interested in this useful device to measure degree of angle
Let's wait and see

Plus, someone is likely to have an answer to my question

I downloaded and tried the free one,,,,, for me it flips automatically when I rotate the phone 90 deg.

BTW, tried several of these apps... don't remember if this was one of them or not, but found most to be inaccurate and/or give inconsistent results. So you might check it against a "known" for a while before you trust it.

Thanks for the reply

The angles on the Sharpmaker (40 degree) measured 20 degrees each triangle rod almost exactly, definitely close enough

The only way I can get the level horizontal is the shut down the anti rotate feature, which is annoying, to me at least

Ihandy level does not correspond with the marks on an edge pro (at least a degree and a half off). With the Spirit Level app, they're dead nuts on so that's what I use exclusively.

If your phone does not have a good accelerometer then it doesn't matter what app you get.

Depending on the width and size of the knife and the clamping position, the angle marks will not be accurate most of the time.

Are people using this app instead of buying an angle cube? Because the latter is very inexpensive.

Yes that is true. However, my measurements were taken with a new stone in the holder and rested on the end of the EP table. No knife. The marks are just a guide anyway.

You are kidding, right?

The free apps are great for figuring out proper angles. There must be 200 apps to try out. In the end, I purchased an Angle Cube from Amazon. It is magnetic, and stays put on a custom ledge I made to hold the Cube. It is $30 and well worth it. The phone is always in the way.

At first it seemed a little outta place but the following post by the OP cleared things up ( nothing like getting the whole story). I didn't post back because I felt "gotcha" was a waste of a good post.

Now as for angle finders, my experience tells me they are horribly inaccurate. Don't believe me? Get one of these and you will see http://www.catra.org/pages/products/kniveslevel1/lgpm.htm

When I'm out on the river bank cleaning fresh caught trout, I'm sure glad that I was able to sharpen my knife to 15° and not 16°.

And can you imagine trying to cut a fuzz stick, chop cardboard, or gut a deer with a knife that was sharpened on a device that was inaccurate by two degrees?

I'm amazed that manufacturers are permitted to get away with this!

(I'm also amazed that there isn't a sarcasm smiley.)
