I recently purchased a fairly high end flipper with IKBS and am noticing a rattle from the pivot area. I assume this is from the bearing system but it has me a little worried. Is this normal or something that should be addressed? I'm new to the IKBS system...........

I don't know what knife you have but is it possible that it's the stop pin rattling?

That seems more likely than the pivot, imo.

Which knife is it? Did you buy it directly from the maker or was it off a forum member on the secondary market?

It was from a member of another forum who is also a highly regarded maker but he didn't make the knife. I don't want to drag makers names into this as I think it probably has more to do with the bearing system. The original maker is also highly regarded. More wondering if this is common with IKBS or should I contact the maker and see what he says?

Telling us which knife it is will allow us to know how it is constructed, which is necessary to form any sort of opinion. Depending on the anatomy of your knife, it could be one of several things.

maybe a bearing or two has fallen out, leaving the remaining bearings with extra room creating a rattle?

One thing that it could be is an extra ball bearing could be inside the pivot shaft. Sometimes I have had an extra ball bearing get inside the pivot during assembly. I doubt it would make any noise, but it is a possibility and is really easy to check.

I have actually thought about putting 3-4 ball bearings inside the pivot shaft of each knife. Just so if someone takes the knife apart and looses a bearing or two, the knife comes with extras (stored within the knife).

Ok it's a Kirby Lambert Sniper, lefty version. I have a call in to him to see what he says. I am 100% confident he will steer me right..

Don't know why, but I find that funny and smart at the same time. :)

I think that that's a great idea, those little bearings are quick! and they disappear in carpet. Luckily my dad works at Grainger and they sell them there, if not I would have a couple knives missing a few.

Bingo. That's exactly what I was thinking. I have no doubts about Kirby's ability to make a knife. I have a Sniper myslef and I love it. I'm assuming that it was taken apart at one point or another and one of the ball bearings was left out upon reassembly or simply fell out upon reassembly. Either way, whether its the stop pin or a BB left out, the knife should be fine. If you're sending it to Kirby then he will definitely take care of you.

By the way. I like the idea of a few extra ball bearings included with my IKBS knives Tim. That's a pretty damn good idea.

Just a simple tip for anyone planning on taking an IKBS knife apart. Always disassemble in a clear plastic bag so that you don't lose anything. Same goes for any thing that may result in a small piece or spring shooting across the room (Ala OTF automatic).

I have no doubts about Mr. Lamberts abilities either, but I bought this described as unused in new condition from a rock solid stand up guy so that is the reason for this thread. I have just as much confidence in the seller as I do in the maker. Kirby will steer me straight, no doubt.
