how do the galyean pro-series knives with IKBS compare to a custom like a begg MIG with IKBS. i'm kind of intrigued by IKBS and these seem like a good start. also i'm wondering if anyone knows of thumbstud/hole opening knives with IKBS and how IKBS compares to a pivot bushing system. is the washer/bearing system irrelevant in a thumbstud opening folder because of the friction from the detent?

oh, I thought the galyean pro-series was a full blown production knife, not a mid-tech.

IIRC the Galyean Pros are assembled by Tim and a fair amount of the machining is done by him. If you look at the latest thread about the Lahars you will see that the handle machining was done off site, but, the blades are being hand ground and I assume that Tim will assemble the knives in his shop.

Just my understanding of the situation.... maybe Tim will chime in soon.

I have a Pro Series JYD and it rivals my customs in quality and finish. Great knife

On the Pro Series JYD's I did everything but the blade grind, laser marking of the blade and the fasteners.

I took the Lahars one step further and I am hand grinding the blades. I do all of the work in house except for the laser marking of the blades and making the fasteners.

I chose to not call these knives "Custom", even though I am doing nearly 100% of the work. I also chose not to call these knives Mid-Tech either, to me Mid-Tech means that a majority if not all of the manufacturing is outsourced. My goal with these knives was to eliminate a lot of the hand work involved by use of CNC equipment and to offer the customer a knife that I made at an afforable cost.

any suggestions for a nice ~500$ IKBS thumb stud opening knife?

I don't know if I've ever seen an IKBS thumbstud opener. Everything I've seen that make us of IKBS have either been flippers or balisongs.

You would be hard pressed to find a knife as finely made as the Pro Series Galyean's , that would be my choice. It is a screaming deal for the price.

sorry missed the part about the thumbstud...

I have both the Galyean JYD and the Begg MIG/Civ. Both are wonderful knives and I would say both are custom or very very near. Both IKBS systems work equally well. You can not go any better than these two knives, even tho I have knives that cost more than either. Also both Tim and Todd are really good fellas, whom I trust equally. Great great knives and you cant go wrong with either.

for a thumb stud deploying knife, how would IKBS compare to a pivot washer with bushing system like what the sebenza has?

I used to have an older Korth IKBS folder that opened with thumbstuds. The action was just as smooth as any IKBS flipper I've handled since. The detent was pretty strong, but once overcome the blade flew open free and easy.

Preference between flipper and thumbstud would come down to how the knife fits and the ease with which it can be manipulated in the individual's hand. Some knives just aren't quite right for your hand to work a thumbstud but if the same knife had a flipper it could be perfect, and vice versa. Neither is necessarily better. Personally, I think flippers tend to be more fun for the same reason that autos are fun - you push a button, or a tab, and the blade flicks open. It just has a different impression than fully manipulating the blade all the way out of the handle.
