I have read and re-read the Illinois laws pertaining to knives but I am still
confused. A basic reading would seem to indicate that the state maximum length is 3.5 inches (obviously local laws can be stricter). However, some have pointed out to me that the blade lenth issue only applies if.when a knife is used in a crime. Does anybody have an opinion if the maximum legal blade length is indeed 3.5 inches?

There's inconsistencies like that in every state. they do it to keep you confused, and in some cases afraid to carry a knife. If being caught with one is a concern, stay around 3 inches, manual folder.

I live in Illinois, and I usually carry something (or two somethings:)) with a 3.5
inch blade. As far as I am aware, you can carry any blade length you like, as long there is no intent on your part to hurt somebody with it. If you are asked by a police officer, don't say you are carrying your knife for self defense, because that indicates "intent" to hurt somebody with it to some police officers.
