I like RR knives. Think they're good quality. The new Imperial as many including myself have said. Only ever had one dud...not a bad knife, just ugly (canoe, crappy scales). Anyway. Y'all are always talking about the Elephants Toenail and I figured I should have one. Got it today. Pretty knife. Was putting a little oil where it needed to be and working the blades when....

That's a first for me for any knife.

Wow, I haven't seen that happen on a RR, but I have seen it on an old Camillus all-steel military issue 'Demo' knife. It has something to do with the heat-treat of the spring steel.

Who did you get the knife from? If you let them know what happened, they may just send you a new one. (That's what SMKW did for me.)

Yeah, I'll get a new one...got it from good people. Surprised the heck out of me though! Broke like a toothpick.

It's not an RR thing, while rare it happens to the best of them.I have a Buck 703 with the same break (and a missing shield).

It's been broken for years and I need to send it in, but since they don't make these anymore I will have to get a different knife as a replacement. I don't want a different knife so I am dragging my feet.

I have bought 100s of RR knives and that happened to one, a split back spring whittler with very thin springs. When I looked closely at the break it had a tiny black inclusion in the metal, and it broke right at the pin so even thinner. The interesting thing is that RR has made the springs quite a bit thicker since that time. I love RR knives.

That happened to me on a GEC (no kidding) when I was opening/closing numerous times to tame a nail breaker pen blade. They fixed it.

Did you hear it "ping" when it cracked, or was it maybe already cracked or weakened and just finally separated? The reason I ask is that I had one go soft suddenly, but did not break out or even look cracked, although I think it must have been cracked on the inside of the spring, just not visible from the outside.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to imply it was due to the knife being a RR. Flukes happen across the board.

As far as sound, I can't really help you. I was kind of daydreaming and it surprised me so much I don't remember.

Already got a full refund, so it's all good. Given the forces involved and as many knives as I have owned, I'm kind of shocked it took this long now that I think about it.

Yup, I have a retired buddy we gave a Canal Street too that the spring gave way on him. They took good care of him, but I'd a never thunk it.
