Hi all,
I will be doing a holiday trip with a camper van through a particularly nice region in Germany.
It's always deliciously agonising fun to make a selection of which knives to take. This being a camper van holiday, I don't need bushcraft-like designs. After some puzzling, this is what I came up with, and most of them are pretty affordable as well (yet I didn't think of the price when I was assembling this set):
Some background.
Looking at the horizontally placed knives, the top 5 will mainly be used for food prep (I love cooking while on holiday), and occasional utility work.
These are:
- the mighty Opinel 12, and a small Opinel 7 which I already often used for cookery abroad.
- Spyderco Pacific Salt: nicely light and versatile, and easy to clean (no worries about rust)
- a new one: Spyderco Bill Moran, deliciously lightweight; feels really practical. Actually I hesitated between it and a Mora.
- a recent favourite: the Boker Plus Rhino. Suprisingly versatile little thing. Really good quality/price
The 2 at the bottom are for eating, and nobody does stylish or quirky folders for food and light utility with more class than the French. Hence:
- A Nontron (forgot the number); beautiful centuries-old design with a boxwood handle. Sometime in the 20th century it also received an Opinel-kind of ring lock.
- A Chambriard Le Compagnon: elegant Le Thiers design
The three at the left are for EDC. The previous ones will in principle not stray far from the van. Now since in Germany a locking knife for EDC should not be one-hand opening, I looked between my 2-hand opening ones. To be honest, if you look half decent and you don't act like a fool then I don't think that police anywhere in Europe will bodysearch you. In my case I simply have too many knives, and it was fun to select some 2-hand opening ones.
- at the right: Victorinox alox Solider; one of my most carried EDCs, perfectly universal and capable.
From the left 2 I am not yet certain which one I will take:
- the Pohl Force Bravo One Outdoor (the one with the black handle) is a sturdy EDC; or:
- the beautiful Boker Folding Hunter White (with ivory micarta handles). Old school quality and charm.
Perhaps I should add another knife, we'll see, but I don't think I NEED more on this trip. The Robert Klaas Monolith for EDC for example. Mmmhhh...
Any knives anyone here will take on holiday?
