... can someone gently reveal to me what the difference is between a Barlow and a Charlow?

There is no difference. Charlow is simply a made up name for a Special Factory Order series of Barlow Knives produced by Charlie Campagna and built by Great Eastern Cutlery. Charlie is a regular Forum poster, knife nut and all around good guy. I'm not sure who started it, but it stuck; CHarlie's barLOW=Charlow.

Thank you very much! One other question- I see in GEC/Tidioute blades that there is some crazy kind of tip used at times. The best way I can describe it would be that it kinda looks like the tip of a cheese knife (there is a cutout where the tip of a spear point would be). Do you know the name of this config? And even better, where does it come from (historical reason its been designed this way?).

It looks like a fairly blunt spear point, but then a little "scallop" has been removed from the tip

They are known as a "One Armed Man" or a "One Arm Opener". Also, mistakenly called a "Razor" for the vague resembelance to a straight razor. Knifelore says they were designed after the War Between the States because so many men had lost a limb, and could not open a pocket knife otherwise. Anybody, including one armed men, can catch the scalloped end of the blade on a pocket seam, table edge, or just about any surface and lever the blade to the open position.

Thank you- thats a vast amount of light where there was once only dark. And I was going to go with Spark. I have since reconsidered ;)

Sweet- I knew this info would present itself shortly- thank you! And I now need a one armed man (I have a bro in law w only one arm- so, he too needs one I guess)

Actually, it appears that Charlie C took the traditional
barlow and improved its design. Built by GEC.
Just my opinion from my observation.

I don't know that this forum contains posters that are ANYTHING but the most handsome, and the most charming, so thats good ;)
