I doesn't seem like he was mentally or physically prepared.Even if he took the cell phone that might not work everywhere in the mountains ! Cell phone , compass, significant food and water , hiking with someone - all should have been done.

At least he had the mindset to get through 2 weeks of being lost in the bush.

But some basic firemaking skills would have alerted the choppers alot earlier and kept him warm at night.
