A few days ago, I was walking my son to school. We saw this giant hornet on the side of the road. I took a picture of it, while it was still barely alive, next to my house key.

After school it was still there, so I kept it. Now it is dead in a jar.

Here's a picture of it next to my BK14 so you can see it's size, incase the key wasn't enough, and to include some Becker content. It curled up after it died.

I'd like to preserve it somehow. But we'll see how that goes.

According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_giant_hornet), the Japanese Giant Hornet is the most lethal animal in Japan. There are also some pretty interesting videos of them on youtube.

Wow, that's a BEAST! I don't like hornets what so ever. I once was pulling my socks on, and I felt something with my toes and freaked out. Apparently, a hornet had crawled into one when it had been drying on the clothes horse outside. I don't wish that experience to anybody, lol.
Amazing critters though!
I kept that one for years in a jar with alcohol, until I got tired of it.

I think, that is a Cicada killer. Hornets that specifically hunt Cicadas, and not much else. I could be wrong though.

I've seen videos online of 30 of these hornets wiping out a bee hive of over 30,000 honey bees. I think they are pretty calm and will leave you alone, unless you piss them off.

A friend of mine found a nest of these outside his house. He said the pest control people who came to remove them were not messing around. They had on extra heavy be suits that included a solid face shield because these can actually squirt their venom. The venom can eat flesh and if you get it in your eyes, you will be blinded because it will eat your eyes.

Whaaaaat? I've never heard that one. And I'm a licensed pest control professional. Going to ask our entomologist about that?

I saw that documentary before. Those things are amazing. They just bit bee heads off like it was nothing. When the host went to find some with a guide, iirc, they had leather gloves on and those things could sting into the leather. Not through it, of course, but if they can puncture leather, imagine how deep they'd get in your skin.

A few summers ago, I was stung between the toes by a hornet that made it's way into my sandal. It wasn't even a big one and my foot burned for an hour or so. Thay say we don't remember pain, but when I see that big sumbitch, my toes curl up and my nuts go up inside a little bit.

Did anyone else see this picture and think of Bumblebee from the new Transformers? I swear they did a GOOD job on molding the face!

That thing is RIDICULOUS! Glad it didn't sting ya'll!

we have cicada killers here, fairly docile unless you mess with them.
burrow into the ground and fly low.
they get about as long as the average index finger

That is a HUGE hornet. I am allergic to hornets and bees and stuff. That guy would probably straight up kill me.

Yeah I have been a licensed PMP since 2006 and I have never heard of any type of hornet shooting venom.

Last year I had my face swoll half shut when a regular hornet got in behind my sunglasses and stung me once in the actual eyeball and twice in the socket....it felt like someone jammed hot needles in my face!!!!!!

Was not even at work just trimming branches on my property and there was a fist sized nest hidden in the underbrush!
I spent 2 days running a chainsaw with one eye looking like the frickin elephant man.

Glad we do not have those giant ones here.
