so I was talking to this kid and he was telling me about his cousin, who is combat engineer/special ops something, anyways he was telling me his cousin had a big collection of combat knives and even had the "Illegal" ones. Is there such thing? what are they? I asked if it was spring opperated, like a swichblade, or that Russian shooting blade he said no.

so my question is are there military knives that the civilians can NOT own?

The only others I can think of are the WWI/WWII knuckle knives that could be a problem under many States laws. Barring State or City laws, most military knives are perfectly fine.

who is combat engineer/special ops something,
There's a big difference between combat engineer and special ops. If he's advertising his kin as being special ops, I would have trouble believing him, especially considering there's lacking credibility to the rest of his statement.

Generally no. In a couple of jurisdictions daggers are illegal for civilians to own or carry, but almost everywhere, they are legal to at least own. Military personnel often can carry knives that might be illegal for civilians while on duty, if they are autherized to carry that type of knife in the performance of their duties.

Yup, big difference in most places between legal to carry and legal to own.
There's not much that's illegal to own, across most of the US. But there's TONS of laws on the books about what's illegal to carry where.

I have a hunch that he's got a couple double-edged knives, which are illegal to carry most places. That's my guess.

odd statement.

the only thing i can think of are autos which are generally available to military or law enforcement personnel. though many states allow carry by civilians.

likely bs, because like msc said, nearly all states prohibit carry of certain items, though ownership of same is normally perfectly legal.

Maybe he is talking about a ballistic knife, aka springblade. I wish it was available for sale, but from my understanding, they are illegal in the US for civilians to own.

That is what I was thinking too.

Some states do have very strict laws on owning, not just carrying, certain knives. In New Mexico, for example:
Unlawful possession of switchblades consists of any
person, either manufacturing, causing to be manufactured,
possessing, displaying, offering, selling, lending, giving
away or purchasing any knife which has a blade which opens
automatically...

James, that sounds to me like some dumb kid peddling a load of BS in a pathetic attempt to impress somebody who doesn't know any better. Ignore him.

The thing is, pretty much any military knives (especially older ones) could be classified as a "curio", relic, etc, and would be perfectly OK to have in pretty much any state in the US. But we're talking about the kind of things you keep in a glass case, a safe, or wrapped in a towel in a shoebox at the bottom of your closet. I mean, in California, a WWI trench knife or WWII Nazi Paratrooper knife would definitely be illegal to carry around, but as a collectors piece, I don't think you'd be in any hot water.
