Hi everyone! I've been looking into the laws regarding carrying a knife in Illinois. I have gotten many mixed answers when it comes to blade length however. Some things I've read say that you can carry anything as long as it is not an automatic and you do not have the intent to use it unlawfully, while others say that the limit is 3 inches. Is anyone able to clear this up for me?

I'm not a lawyer, but as I understand it Illinois has no blade length limit. You can basically carry any non-auto folding knife you want- as long as you stay out of the City of Chicago. Chicago has a crazy short blade length limit (2" or 2.5"), but I've been carrying in Illinois (Chicago and NW suburbs) for almost 20 years and have never even been asked about my pocket clip...

Laws are vague at best. My Bro-in-Law is an LEO and he said he doesn't care what someone is carrying if they aren't using it for criminal activity. City of Chicago is more clear for sure.

It would be awesome if Knife Rights eventually got around to Illinois and successfully passed a preemption law. That would solve the hazy law thing for good. Although I've never had an issue before, I fear the day I run into a cop in a pissed off mood in the wrong municipality for whatever reason (now that I've grown up a bit my interaction with police has dwindled to a minimum but still, you never know.)

You guys should join up with knife rights, I tossed in some cash for a membership knowing I was helping the cause in the only way I could.
