Illusion Release?

I got to handle a D/A LCC for the first time today, and while it's a cool knife, it is just too big for me. I do however, love the way the blade is released.

I think the size of the blade is the problem for me but the price of the LCC and a custom blade would be fairly high (I assume). Does anyone else make a smaller knife with an illusion release, and if so, what is the quality like and what should I expect to pay?

BaliLover,

I think illusion release is what Darrel Ralph refers to his hidden release autos as. The illusion release is a kick-spring auto in which a specially modifed screw toggles forward to release the kick spring.

Larry Chew also makes a clever DA...his Covert models. In these you push a special screw, but he also incorporated a lockout. Very trick.

Then there are numerous scale/slide/squeeze release mechanisms where an entire scale toggles to release the spring.

Hope this gets you started.

yes, I guess I was misinformed about what the mechanism was called. I just like the fact that no one can really tell that the knife is an auto. Could you point me in the direction of the others? Also, what is the quality like on the others?

I'm not sure about other factory DAs that have hidden releases.

Butch Vallotton makes a Chamelion that retails for about $350 (actually Nifrand has one in the for sale section for $285). I consider these knives semi-production as Butch has made over 1000 of them. I played with a few in Eugene and really liked it...good dollar value.

If you want to step up a notch, I don't think you could go wrong with something from Larry Chew.

Mitch is all over this one. Good call on Nifrand's listing in F/S forum on the Chameleon. Looks to be a good deal.

I wandered through the Eugene show and stopped dead in my tracks at the BladeGallery.Com table. I saw this knife by Darrel Ralph and had to try it. I considered running out to the parking lot and selling the wife's car for a couple hundred cash so that I wouldn't have to put it back down. I rationalized that a divorce would cost me half of everything I own, and I still thought this was a reasonable price. That illusion release of DDR's is that cool.

Anyways, I would also recommend dropping by the Automatic Knife Forum here in the General Discussion department. Bunch of good folks in there to ask.
