I finally find a guy to help me with my balisong today. After an hour of flipping and spinning I cut the bejesus out of myself closing my knife. Total damage. 1 blood soaked lifting strap, OJ Simpson crime scene looking gym bag, very red face not to mention finger. That is one of the most embarassing things I have done in a while. Oh, cut went to the bone, but stopped bleeding after about 45 minutes. I think I will be using my trainer for a while and leave the BM alone. Atleast until this reminder heals. I am sure you all dont care but I thought you might get a chuckle out of my lack or prowess.

Oh no. We care. It's one of those two sided things. On one side it sucks you cut yourself. On the other is the warm feeling that you've just experienced what many of us went through....

As once expressed somewhere in the past: Welcome to the bloody botherhood.

If it make you feel any better, I cut myself to the bone recently with the 49-01's kris blade. And I've been doing this for a long time. It still happens. But if it didn't, you'll never respect the blade.

TO THE BONE! You guys must be doing some pretty sick manipulations to get the damn thing to cut to the bone. I've gotten nicks before, but not bone deep.

I get the chills just thinking about the wound and all that blood.

I'm feeling *faint*

Yes, it's true. We've all gotten quite some bits from that vicious blade. ;) I can't say I've been cut into the bone, but I've gotten some slices in my fingers when i throw the knife, and I don't catch it right; the blade instead of landing perfectly, slides down the paw of my index finger, causing a deep, lots-bleeding cut. :D Had to wear a bandage on my finger!

But you must always sacrifice for you hobby.

Now THIS would make a great bump sticker. :)

When I cut myself, I remember the Filipino saying: "there is a devil in every blade".

Watch it now. I had 3 stiches in the palm of my hand from moving the balisong.

My first night with my BM43 ended up with the near removal of the pad on my pinky. I lost some feeling in the finger, but it healed real nice! It's a bali move I call the "fling blood into the face of your attacker to confuse and disorient him!" At least that's what I told the guys at work :).

I would certainly believe that a BM49 is fully capable of going right through to the bone. It's the sharpest thing I've ever seen. It's a good thing that I satisfied the urge to manipulate one before I found out how sharp it is or I would have been afraid of it and my fear probably would have caused me to goof up and get cut.

Any cut where you can see bone (and if you consider it, you'll realize that many people have very little flesh between the surface of their skin and the bone on the back of their fingers) is very serious. If you nicked or even scratched the surface of the bone, you can get an infection in the bone and that can end up being very serious and very hard to cure. So, any time you see bone, you should see a doctor.

Otherwise, I'll say it again, cuts do heal faster with Neosporin.

I work with Docs. And yes they all had a good laugh. I guess I cant say as I blame them. I did however not see the humor in having my skin pulled back they so they could, "get a better look at my "eccentricness" at work". I would have hoped military types would have been more forgiving. Oh well. I guess in two weeks or so all will be back to normal.

You and the knife are now one.

I actually smiled the first time my 43 bit me.

Oh, and I strongly dont belive in tape unless you are doing ariels.
When I do new stuff I go through each part step by step to see how it all works out, then gradually get quicker at it.

One of my "stupid marks" is a nice 1/2" long cut from my new Tachyon. I made three mistakes:
1. it is my first balisong, and I had no experience and didn't at the time know what the concept of a "safe handle" was
2. I had been drinking ... probably 2/3 of a bottle of wine at that stage
3. I was playing around with the Tachyon while putzing around on the web.

That is a "triple fault" in my book. I have a 1/2" long by "nearly to the bone" cut on my right index finger between the knuckles. It took nearly 2 hours for it to stop bleeding, 7 bandaids. Thought I was going to have to head for ER and get about 3 or 4 stitches.

Suggestion: I kept the new gash covered with bandaids for probably 10 days, and kept it covered with a triple antibiotic cream, like Neosporin but 3 flavors. It never scabbed over, and made a much nicer "stupid mark", otherwise known as a scar.

It's not my first, or last, "stupid mark".

It's tougher if you are stupid.

Maj...welcome to the Bali-Forum. Yeah the deeper cuts can slow up practice a bit. As mentioned.., we've all been there.., just watch very carefully for infection on those deep ones. Hope it heels quickly!

Thank you all for listening to me rant. I guess I was getting bored sitting here with my hand on my head. I took grief from the coworkers about that also. Right now my finger feels ok. A little sore but not too bad. I think if I can keep it from reopening over the next 2 or 3 days I will be fine. In other news. While cleaning the blood off my knife, I adjusted the tension. About 30 degree's of tightening on each handle. That little bit made a huge difference. Not a finger saving difference mind you, but the knife does feel much better now. Atleast to my left hand. Take care all and have a good weekend.

PS. Sorry for any typos but typing is hard.

Yep been there done that. But I still cringe when I remember the look on my wifes face when my son forgot that the Tacyhon came with a Manila style latch. OUCH.

Me too buddy, been cut just like the rest of us. Never that bad with a bali (knock on wood) just with knives in general (cut bad). Twice it was kinda bad with a bali though. Once with a very sharp PC 69 while showing a friend a flip as he never used one....DUH ! blood spilling on my living room floor. The most recent was with a BM42, I was in a good zone flippn' alot and doing dribs and drabs of an old form I did back when. As I did a check with the live hand and slash with the blade hand. I wasn't paying enough attention to the live end of the blade and cut a nice deep but clean and neat gash into my left hand near the palm but lower in the fleshy heel. OUCH! and DUH! again but "play with knives and get cut". That's the way it goes. Next time probably wont be as bad (fingers crossed)Same for you, but no matter what we get cut no matter how good we get. They're sharp and quick ad do a lot of damage. That's some of why we love them so....RDT
