I just got six new spyderco knives. a gunting, a military, an endura, a delica, and the endura and delica trainers. This will be my 3rd delica, the first one i had, my friend broke the tip off of and i gave it to him, and the second one i had clipped to the seatbelt while I was driving, and i forgot that it was there when I opened the door to get out, it is now MIA. This is my second Endura, my first one I sold to my dad because he needed a good knife to go sailing with. I was really really excited to get the gunting and the military. The military is lighter then I expected it to be, I thought the G10 would be thicker and more textured, but its actually very light and quick, perfect for IWB carry. The only problem I have with it is the notches cut out where your thumb goes for grip always catches on the pocket of my pants when I try to spyder drop it. And then we come to Gunting #908.
I have 5, count em, 5 cuts on my left hand from the day I got my gunting, and 1 on the inside of my left wrist.
me: Dar, gee, this is a cool knife, i think ill practice opening it on my arm.
my girlfreind: you shouldn't do tha...
me: OUCH, It bit me!!!
This happened 6 times. On the 5th one I though I might have to go to the hospital. I hit bone, cut about a quarter inch into my left index finger, poured ****ing blood everywhere. The scary part was I didn't even feel it cut me until i hit the bone. I have never cut myself so much with a knife in my entire life. I am now afraid of it, I don't carry it anymore, it sits in its box and stares at me with these demonic haunting eyes. I think its going to try and get me one of these nights. Thats ok though, I sleep with my military!:D

LOL! That's why we always say to buy the Gunting Trainer. It costs the same as the live blade but it's worth it's weight in gold. You sound like someone who needs to learn the hard way... a couple of times I guess :) Good knife choices, just be more careful! :)

Yeah, I cant afford the trainer though, so I'm just going to leave it alone for a while, I'm seriously scared of it now. If I can't figure out how to manipulate this thing properly, I'm going to do myself a favor and trade it off... For a Civilian! Mwha, yes, I'll really send myself to the ER this time!:p

Yeah, I cant afford the trainer though

So perhaps you can save up for a gunting trainer? You should find it to be a more than worthy investment. Or, at least your left hand will. :D

I think you should give the Gunting a chance before you trade it off. Just be very careful and start manipulating it very slowly! Tape up the blade so that it cannot cut you. Just practice basic work with it and the rest will develop. Maybe you could make the small investment of buying one of the video tapes. I think you'll like it if you are just more careful with it.

For God's sake, get a copy of the tape, "Spyderco Presents the Gunting by Bram Frank"! It goes through all of teh neat things that you can do with a Gunting, but, more importantly, it shows you how to avoid doing the things that will hurt you. It should be required viewing for anyone who acquires a Gunting.

What strikes me as odd; with all the various postings about safety in handling the Gunting is that Zantezuken did'nt pick-up on the warnings. I don't think there's been a single Gunting thread that did'nt mention saftey in handling issues. ZanteZuken's been around the boards for awhile, so I'm wondering where the gap in information occured.

I'm pointing this out because Bram is emphatic about safety in training with the Gunting. It's always hard to hear about someone hurting themselves. The Gunting is a serious tool, requiring committment in time and dollars, for proper and safe training. When treated as a novelty, it will remind the owner of it need for respect.

Zante, I've had my issues with you in the past, calling your attitudes into question regarding your maturity regarding bearing of force tools. You fired back that I had no right in making such statements -- perhaps that's true. Cutting your self five times before halting your exprimentation, however, doesn't reflect well on your progress.

However, I will offer this, If you understand that you need to develop attitudes of responsibility in handling lethal force tools, I Am willing to bring my Gunting trainers and provide the basics frist hand.

If you take my message as offensive... well then, I recommend you avoid force tools, for you may endanger yourself more than any BG.

Good Luck Chris,

-Seth
