Hey guys I'm a newbie on these forums, not forums all together but BladeForums. I was wondering if someone could let me know where I might make a new thread about trying to get some Damascus in Bar strock to make rings on a lathe. I've talked to people on other forums and they said that this would be the best place to ask. I'm looking for 1" or 1.25" round (1.25" Preferred). It dose not have to be the greatest or the nicest steel because it is not for knives. Someone said that I would have a better bed looking for some in a tube, but the only thing is that I need it to have thick walls that will fit around the finger or different sizes. As long as the inside diameter is less the .5" then I can make sizes 2-12 witch is in the zone for most common sizes (7 for Women, 10 for Men). People where telling me that maybe I can find a piece of scrap Damascus from a barrel, but from what I've heard most of the barrels where shotgun barrels and I don't think that would work; Barrel Picture - (http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSBcHILKZiDq1ou-46A1BWU7n6v0G2Ng2ACf5uII5cLXKTkCYQvpU08aSaA) Also I dont want to be spending $180 on a 10" piece like on ebay. I need to keep it cheaper I am on a budget. I was also thinking of doing Titanium rings and anodizing them for Christmas gifts but I dont know where to get that in round bars either.

If someone could lead me in the right direction as to where to post this question it would be great.

There was also another question I was looking for a place to make the thread.

Late a few nights ago I was looking at some posts and I saw one about a teenager about my age (He was 15 I am 16; 17 January) and he was asking if there was anyone in his area that was willing to let him become like an apprentice to them, as a knifemaker. It was late and I don't recall the hole situation only that he was looking for help to start knifemaking. Anyway I was wondering this to for myself.
I was wondering if there is anyone in the Ottawa area that Is willing to help out a younger person to get into knifemaking. I've been wanting to make knives for a long time now. I bought some steel a while back to grind on our sharpening system, a 1x42 grinder. The only think is that I don't have that many tools. Not a very good grinder, no band saw, no way to heat treat, and no way to scribe. However my Father is friends with a gunsmith and he said I can bring my knife blank in and scribe it with his.

A couple of month ago I got some steel two 1/8" 2"x8" pieces one 1095 and one 1084 I believe. I I used an Angle grinder with a cut-off wheel to cut off the big chunks and then I switched to a grinding wheel to get the profile. I then finished it on the belts. My dad is a Automotive mechanic in Ottawa and has some tools but not many, and most I cannot take home. I really want to try forging a blade and doing my own heat treat. I also have been thinking of getting a grinder but the cheapest one I can find is this. (http://www.amazon.com/Grizzly-G1015...id=1347233092&sr=8-2&keywords=Grizzly+Grinder) $500+ is a big investment for me and I don't really want to just go and buy it without really trying it out. Also they don't even ship that machine to where I am.

If anyone could help me out it would be great I know its a lot.

All right.

1) Go to the Forum Categories tab near the top of the page. When you pull down that tab, there will be an entry for Knife Makers Discussion. They should be able to answer all of your questions.

2) Don't be afraid of asking stupid questions. People here are wonderfully patient. Just don't be a Troll. We troll back, and we show no mercy.

Shorttime I dont know if your saying I'm trolling or not but I'm not hahahah, I actually want to make knives.
