I purchased a Queen City Large Sunfish from GPknifes. I like the knife other than the fact that it is extremely hard to open. I own a dozen other good quality knives and none of them are even close to as difficult to open as this. I called the people at GP and the lady answering the phone said it will loosen up with use. I have spent hours working it with a glove and it ain't gettin any looser. I called Queen Queen City Knives for help and their warranty dept never picks up. I have left several messages and no one has returned the call. My question is: Is their something I can do to free up the mechanism? Thanks!

You could try to leave the blade halfway open (Or, rather, the point where spring is pushed the furthest by the blade.) for a few hours/days. If that doesn't work, you could try opening the blade a bit, and use something like a screwdriver (With some leather or cloth wrapped around it to prevent scratching.) to bend the spring upwards slightly. The second method should be used very carefully, since you can't bend it back; if you bend it too much, it might not even hold the blade closed or open.

You could also try applying some oil between the tang and the spring, as well as opening and closing it a lot of times; doing so should polish the working surfaces, and make it slide open easier. It might also, eventually, slightly reduce the spring tension.

Try giving it a good flushing with a light oil like WD-40 to make sure there is no polishing gunk trapped in the pivot area.

I'd return it for one they have tested for proper (easy) opening. No NIB knife should be this hard to open.
