Im still at school here in england and im doin A level technology. Ive found out i would be allowed to make a sword using school equipment (nothing amazing, but its a decent setup for a school).
I have acess to some maraging steel and am wondering what would be the best way to go about making it...the processes, how to shape the blade (i wanna make it in the shape of a katana if poss) how to polish/heat treat maraging steel etc etc...in other words: im a noobie

so could you please give me some tips and point me in the direction of some faqs or guides.

What do i need to know about the blade before i start?
how do i attach it to a handle?

Can't help you much with the your sword questions, just wanted to say welcome and have a great time here.

i think the stuff i can get has carbon content about 0.30%.
Is the degree to which u can sharpen the blade dependant on the carbon content? or does carbon just change the stiffness?

also seeing as this steel has quite low carbon content - there wouldnt be much point folding it with something more flexible like nickel would there? so what if i were to fold it with something a little stiffer that can sharpen better?

should i bother slow cooling the core of the blade when i heat treat it (u know, putting clay over the centre of the sword but leaving the edge clear so the edge cools quickly but the core effectively anneals)?

thx for any answers

.3% carbon is too low for a knife. You can get it as sharp as any knife, it just won't hold an edge for any length of time. For a decorative sword, it may work good enough.

so what if i folded it with something a little harder and more resilient would it hold edge better then?
could you give me an example metal?
