Good contest, I suggest being careful when you are "planting" your blade in something for some one handed work, or you might just be doing some one handed work.

Pfft, I say throw caution to the wind and jam that sucker in all sorts of stuff. If you give the contest a little believability, it will go a long way towards ensuring a win.

One word: Bloodsplatter

Exactly. 1 million bonus points for those that really commit and chop off one hand. Happy Halloween btw

Cutting won't be an issue for me, it'll be the lighting part that might be hard...

So what part do we time? From when we try to ignite?

The whole aspect of making fire. Gathering, shaving, splitting, lighting the whole nine. Hell if you gotta convince your woman to let ya start a fire in your backyard, I wanna see pics of it with one hand behind your back and the chrono on your watch ticking away :D.... no but from the time you set out to build it. So the second you pick up a piece wood or dry tinder.

Heck, use the spare hand to hold the camera. Then there are no issues.

This is my mini kit that I take everywhere. BK14 w/ photon light, mini firesteel on one side and tinderbox on the other. Cup with 8oz. water, stopwatch and a hunk of pitchwood. I carry pitchwood in my tinderbox attached to the knife but not this big of a piece.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Timer started, left hand in pocket. Boot up on the pitchwood and scraping with the spine of that knife. Did this for two or three minutes. Did not stop the timer to take pic's.

Poking the knife straight down into the pitchwood to get some pencil sized pieces, this is about the 5 or 6 minute mark.

Trying to ignite the pitchwood shaving with that little gobspark or what ever it was, not a LMF. I left the firesteel attached to the sheath and sorta positioned the tinder as close as I could get it. Really totaled that firesteel, It lit at about the 10 or 11 min mark.

The bigger pieces added on, I then transferred the burning wood to my pit

One handed battoning some bigger chunks off.

Put the cup on the fire at about 16 or 17 min and just held it there.

Got a rolling boil at 24 min 38 seconds

I'm in, but how big a fire do you want. Time wise do you just wanna see the tinder get lit and burning, boil a cup of water or burn a string?

As big as ya want. I just want water boiled so as big as you think you will need. I'm thinking bonfire ;)

Learn what you can do if you were hurt.

If I were hurt, I'd break out my lighter or my matches. :p
I'm thinking of doing a friction fire with a hand drill for this contest. :D

Dude!!!! I so want one of those. I'm gonna do my bestest to win this one :D

Thanks for the contest clich!!!!!

sorry, I'm not in, I actually started taking pics. I scraped off some fatwood with one hand, then I tried my best to scrape my firesteel with one hand, and that was impossible, thanks for the contest anywho. Maybe I could help wit' judging?

Don't give up! Remember, when it comes to survival, giving up is NOT an option!
I'm about to post some hints on how to get that done and that should put you back on track.

My first attempt came to a halt after my wife caught me trying to start the fire on our small backyard. Her concern wasn't the fire but the possibility of a receiving a fine since our county has been on a burn-ban for a while. Since I do not know when or if I will be able to finish the challenge, I want to share my progress and what I've learned so far so that others can use these skills and hopefully complete the challenge. Here's my story so far:

- I began by removing my left arm at the elbow. I was really committed ok? My only concern here is that it doesn't seem to be growing back as I thought.
- My second step was to collect the tinder, kindling and wood which is a lot harder than I thought with only one hand. I chose old wood pieces about 3 to 4 inches on diameter. I used crushed pine needles as tinder and planned to reinforce the fire with pieces of dried pine sap to make it last longer and increase my chances of success.

- Batoning: Let's be real here... what are the odds that you will run into a flat or self standing piece of wood it the wild? SLIM at best! My solution to this problem was to place one piece of wood on the ground and place a second one on top of it perpendicularly forming a T shape. This lifts the first piece high enough off the ground to allow for a swift strike with the knife which will either split/break the piece of wood or wedge the knife into it to continue swinging the knife with the piece attached.
Here I can also recommend using old-almost-rotten wood which splits into pieces much easier with every strike. The drier, the better!

- Striking the steel: I developed two methods for this. The first one was to raise the firesteel with a piece of wood and press down with my foot. This allows for control, accuracy and lifts the steel off the ground. A second idea involves using fibers or jute twine to tie a piece of wood and the firesteel together by twisting the firesteel. This secures the firesteel to the wood and allows for more control and accuracy. Although you still have to use your foot, this makes it much easier that the first method.

That's as far as I made it. Really now all that is left is the ignition but since we had some rain today I am hoping that they will lift the burn ban. Otherwise I might just have to drive about an hour away to another county without a ban. In that case I will start where I left off and post the results. If not, good luck! and I hope this small tutorial can help you win the prize!
