I do believe that I've caught the HI Khukuri affliction.
My first one has not even arrived yet (bought it today).
I'm already looking for all the info that I can find on the Net regarding khukuris and Gorkhas and Nepal, etc.
One of the consolations I have is the knowledge that other people are similarly infected.
I'm glad to be in your company.

welcome aboard and be prepared for a long stay.

which one did you get?

Semper Fi, and if it is any further consolation....it gets worse frome here on  :D

Welcome to the forum. These are about the nicest bunch of guys that you'll ever get to deal with. It all trickles down from Uncle Bill...

Welcome to the Cantina, USMC! You have just joined forces with the greatest collection of honest, helpful, knowledgeable, and demented people on the net. You will soon find that any dealings you have with Uncle Bill are a pleasure - he treats all his customers the way he would like to be treated. Adios, stevomiller

Wow, this is a friendly bunch. To answer some of the questions asked of me: I bought a WW II-16.5". I am no longer part of the Corps (but the Corps is still part of me). Tradition and history are a very strong part of my makeup. As is a fascination with weapons. The khukuri would have been a great Marine Corps weapon. I carried a KBAR when I wore a younger man's clothes and was painting my face black. I will write my reaction to the khukuri when I receive it. Uncle Bill is very easy to talk to and has followed up on all his promises so far. Does anybody have any info on a khukuri called "Magic"? If so, what is it like? Oh man, I haven't gotten the first, and I'm talking about another. As I said, I'm caught.

USMC,

Welcome to the forums.

We have a support group that meets here 7x24 to help members affected by HIKV. No 12 step program, just alot of sympathy.

Stay tuned.

Welcome USMC!! Thanks for serving! I think all H.I. khuks are "magic". Each one has it's own spirit and are truley some of the best blades ever to be forged!! When you get yours test it out and tell us what you think! Have fun!!:D

Welcome aboard USMC. I'm kind of a new comer here myself and can say you've come to the right place. You won't find a better group to visit with anywhere else on the board;). You have defiantly been bitten by the HIKV bug and the only tempoary relief is to call Uncle Bill and place another order. Like SkagSig40 said all the KhuKuri's have a little magic that's what makes them special :D. Let us know when your WWll comes in, I've been thinging about getting one of those myself.

They still call the Gelbu Special the "magic" model over at BirGorkha.

That's the model our Marine Corpsman elected to carry to Afghanistan.

When my great pal and forumite RayC was a Marine Scout in Nam on an R&R journey to Hong Kong he tried to buy a khukuri from a Gorkha who was on duty. Of course, the Gorkha couldn't start selling his gear off his body while on duty so Ray had to go back to Nam and use whatever he could find that would work for him. But, today Ray owns more than 40 khukuris!!!

Welcome USMC,
My Brother GRAD. "HONOR MAN at PI in the 60's so I have a fondness for the USMC!"Magic" that term describes "ALL" K'S!Just wait, you will see what I mean! Decided on what your, second, third & forth etc. are going to be??:D Just remember, when you see UBDOTD come up,type in the word "MINE" as fast as you can, don't think,or ponder,"just type"!Oh yeah, hope Koz, Blues,or SOME OTHERS ,are away cause they are faster than light!

Welcome, you are indeed doomed. It is a fun ride though, the company can't be beat.

"Uncle Bill's Deal of the Day"?? This means that I have to sock away some money that can be accessed quickly. How many times can I tell my wife that "I had that knife for a long time, and it's not new - it just looks that way"? Any suggestions? I may very well put in for one of those Gelbu specials (the Magics) based on the decision of my brother Marine. If it was carried to Afghanistan, then it should be pretty good. The Afghans have their own version of the khukuri from what I've read so far, and you have to fight fire with fire sometimes.

USMC -
The Corpsman won't be the only one in Afghanistan carrying a Gelbu Special. One of the news pics showed a Gorkha wiping down a blade that was a Udhaipar, from which the GS was modeled, Doves's Eye cho, fuller, and everything. I think some of the Taliban are in for a rude awakening....if they in fact do awaken

Looks like your H.I. education has got off to a good start. And yep, you need to have a stash put away for the UBDOTD's.:D
The way to keep the wife appeased is to buy her her very own little khukuri, or even the Kumar Karda or JKM-1 for use in the kitchen or concealed in her purse.
The KK's are beautiful little things with sometimes very elabotate carved handles, if you can call a 5"-6" blade little.:)
We have a much different perspective on what a little knife is around here where the 16"-18" khuks are of a middle size.:D

Ignore what the rest of the crowd are saying...THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS HIKV!!!...You are more than welcome to join the growing team of researchers into the khukuri phenomena. In other words...the K Files!!!

Harry
HI Khukuri Researcher
Assistant Chief Khukuri Washer, Bar Tender, and provider of Hung Over Remedies ala mode!!!

This is pretty funny, as I was reading another post here in the cantina where someone was calling 1/4 inch stock "thin". :D My kind of people.

Don't get me wrong, thin knives have their place, and they can cut like the dickens, but there is just something about holding a SUBSTANTIAL amount of steel in your hand that is satisfying. I'm gloating, I know cuz I just sharpened my Malla, and no tree is safe...wait just a second...ok, now it's completely dark outside, see you all later...;) :p
