Is Spyderco a knife making company in itself? I saw on ebay where certain individual knife makers were selling their custom knives with Spyderco. What gives here?

I think what you probably saw were custom collaberations done by spyderco and a custom maker. Where spyderco(or other companies like crkt and benchmade) take a custom makers design and mass produce their own version of that design with permission from the maker.

Or you may have seen some spyderco knives that someone customized at home by putting new scales on them, or adding some filework or engraving, and then was reselling them to make a profit. There are at least a couple of crafsmen that specialize in customizing production knives, Frank Recupero come to mind.

hope this helps

spyderco is a knife making company. The spyderco knives that are designed by custom makers are collaborations. For example, the Howard Viele was designed by Howard Viele for spyderco to make and sell.

Thanks for clearing that up. I notice that some Bucks are advertized the same way.

Is Spyderco really a knifemaking company? Or
are they a marketing company that contracts out with other companies to make their products? I am not being facetious, just curious.

I know that Browning doesn't make any of their own firearms either....but they have one heck of a product in some of their rifles and shotguns!

Spyderco does make some of their own knives, in Golden Colorado, these incldude the native and the military, they also contract out many of their knives and have them made overseas, such as the endura and the delica.
