The Moran is such a well designed, ergonomic knife, made from a decent steel, yet there seldom seems to be any discussion of it.

Is it perhaps that there is little interest in fixed blades on this subforum?

i had got one for a friend perfect hunting knife perfect size it is stinking razor sharp!! its an awesome blade for what is designed for!! ergos are awesome.. it really would just kick every other hunter out of ur pack

the reason why it isnt popular or gets a lot of attention is its been around for a long time.. and the looks are just kinda plain

its made for function not flash i think that why it doesn't get attention.. but i personally love it!! and the price!!.......man u can't beat it!!

I'd agree that there's a relatively low interest in fixed blades here. Plus, while both the Moran models are excellent, neither is flashy. The though of field dressing a deer just does get the juices flowing to the same degree as visions of sneaking up behind an enemy sentry and slitting their throat. ;)

I think it has alot to do with the lack of interest in fixed blades. Spyderco is pretty much known for their folders. While I'm sure the fixed blades are fantastic as well, most spydie guys are into folders. Theres so much more variety and specialization with the folder aspect of Spyderco's line. Plus, it kinda looks like "every other hunting/skinning/outdoors knife"....ever. :p

I'd have been all over a moran if I find it easy to carry and conceal an FB in my day to day routine.

It's not discussed on this forum, because it's old, not "hot" and not "tacticool." Plus, except for the initial issue in the leather sheath, it's not very collectible.

Per "it kinda looks like "every other hunting/skinning/outdoors knife"....ever." I personally think the design is somewhat unique. It certainly does not look like any Buck, Case, Puma, or Gerber product. IIRC it was the first Spyderco fixed blade for "carry", first with VG-10 and the first and possibly the only Moran/Production company collaboration.

The Moran dates from the days when spyderco was more about knives for typical uses (other than EDC). The Spyderco linup had the "best" fish knife, "best" hunting knife and about 3 types of kitchen knives in both serrated and plain edge. IIRC, only the Moran is left these days.

I looked at buying a Moran a little while back but couldn't bring myself to get it because of the partial tang. At least a couple of threads somewhere referenced issues with it. When I saw the 2012 Spydie catalog, I jumped on the new Phil Wilson Southfork in S90V. It's been pre-ordered since I first saw it. The price tag is certainly harder to swallow and there was some factory pricing mixup; so, the price went up another $20. Regardless, it should be worth it.

I spent some time reading on Phil's website. His design and influence should make this may favorite fixed blade. The last eta I saw was 2nd qtr. of 2012. Do they every come in ahead of schedule? I can hope can't I?

Once the Southfork is available, I think you're going to see more excitement over Spyderco FBs.
