 woohooo!

it's been a long time coming, but today i finally stumped up for some nice new blades.

the fluctuating AUD$ has seen me put this off several times recently until i just went "stuff it!" and placed the order.

shortly my mailbox will contain the following pieces of quality steel:

1x Fallkniven S1 in Laminated VG-10
1x Fallkniven WM1 in 3G
2x Mora Clipper 840s (one for mum's car and one for me to give to people who ask to borrow a blade)
1x DC3 sharpening stone

these will actually be the first knives i've bought in about nine years and will also be my first "outdoorsy" knives (i've recently taken up the sport of Archery and bowhunting for feral species is good fun. my Leatherman Wave and kitchen blades just aren't up to the tasks).

thank you so much to everyone here at bladeforums.com who has helped me out and offered me advice on my knife choice. i did a ton of research before settling on the Fallkniven option.

other knives i considered very, very carefully were: Bark River Bravo 1, Ka-Bar USMC, ESEE RC-5, ESEE Izula, Cold Steel Recon Tanto and some of the Busse offerings.

time will tell if i made the right choices i suppose.

i'll let you know when they get here.

wheeeee! a new fixed blade EDC for ME!!! (the WM1 will find a very happy home in my camera bag i rekon)

I would really like it if Fällkniven made carbon steel blades... with rounder handles... and somewhat larger guards... in sweden.

yuh. it's seems a little strange to be buying a Japanese made blade from a Swedish company via a US based dealer.

as i see it, the round trip for my blades is something like this:

1: Iron Ore mined in Australia & shipped to Japan (anyone got any idea who in Japan, exactly, makes the Fallkniven blades? i'd like to find out if Aussie iron ore is used in their manufacture. i assume it is given we export the vast bulk of Japans iron ore to them).
2: Knife blanks made in Japan.
3: Knife blanks shipped to Sweden for finishing.
4: Finished knife shipped to a US based dealer.
5: Then shipped to Me in outback Queensland, Australia.

that's a lot of miles to basically wind up back where it started.
