I went into a wholesale place and noticed that they were carrying the TOPS cat tanto clone, it cost less than 5.00 so I picked one up. It's a total copy down to the last hole with cheap dark wood handle scales that can be removed it's made of 420j2 and came with a nylon sheath. It doent have the TOPS Tactical OP's written on the blade like the one in the smoky mountain knife works catalog but it looks exactly like the TOPs knife. It's a nice knife for what I paid but I still feel guilty about buying a copy, on the other hand I cant really say that I would be satisfied if I paid 100bux for this style of knife no matter steel/fit/finish/handle material. I dont know how to explain it except if it was a production knife made by cammilus out of a good steel I'd buy one if it was in the 30-45 dollar range but I cant really see myself paying 100bux for the type/style.

I think it's buying something that I cant afford, like a sebenza or a simonich raven something really nice and expensive

How do those Hail Mayos go, something like Hail Mayo full of ____

What do I look like? The Pope? :D

(I'm Lutheran, afterall.)

You'll have to fill that blank in for yourself. ;)

I think the proper penance would be to pick out a TOPS knife you like and buy it...

I think it's "Hail Mayo full of holes"

Bwhaaahaaaaahaaaahaaaa!
That is the funnyies thing I've read here in a long, long time :D :D :D :D

Proper penance for a knifeknut?
Maybe confiscation of all sharpening equipment...
A dull bladed knut would be a sad sight, to be sure.

Cool, my first Bwaha on BF! Well, not the first, but this time I was actually trying to be funny.:)

Penance?- send the knife to TOPS and tell them their knife won't hold an edge. Take whatever punishment they mete out.

Some knockoffs are punishment enough, especially when you realize that the 5 dollars you spent wasn't even worth it! I can feel your pain though, I've been guilty of the same offense.

but I like my fingers the way they are....... I'm going to be buying a street scalpel in the next couple of weeks. It's not a bad knife for what it is I was using it to pry some these screw cover things off to where I could take down some stuff, used it to cut some strips of duct tape, and the job for which it was most suitible for scraping dog crap off my shoes after playing fetch with my four legged friends :D Anybody know what TOPS means when they say surgical stainless steel on the street scalpel ???????

"Surgical Stainless" could mean almost anything but usually refers to the stainless alloys that are used in medical devices (artificial hips, bone screws, etc.). The most common steel alloy for that stuff is 316. Sometimes they mean 316L or 302 or 303, or 304. Only a metallurgist could tell the difference so most manufacturers will only say "300 series".

Oh crap! When the heck did TOPS start making the Street Scalpel in "Surgical Stainless Steel"? What's the world coming to?!?! :barf:

I have one of the older ones in carbon steel (it's in my back left pocket right now!) and it seems to work great - why the change in materials?
