YEE HAW!!!
Just picked up my flashes (FSA 97 and FSA 98) today. I am in seventh heaven. They appear to be well made, crafted tools. The action is well done, scale design is thin and comfortable for my smalled hands.

Overall, I think I shall be very pleased.

Just thought I would let you all know.

Hi Hunterwright,

I'm very excited to know you are happy! At SOG, we have been very excited to get these knives moving out the door.

You know, since you are the first forumite (besides myself) to possess a couple of these, we need a bit better of a review! ;) We have a bunch of people really excited to know all about these knives and some who are eagerly awaiting theirs.

Here's a picture of my sample Flash I & II that I showed in another thread.

God... Ron you're making my Want to Buy knife list a heck a lot longer............
It would be even better if they're PE. I don't like serrations on folders much.

Considering I have had these for two whole days, I can't add much to what I have already said.

I will add this much though, the Flash I appears to me to be one of the more perfect pocket knives. The size is just right to ride in the pocket without being too large, the weight is negligible. The size of the FSA-97 (I) is such that it is very comfortable and capable of operating with or without the pocket clip installed (the grip is not too thin). I find if I use the pocket clip, it rides just where I want it, at the outside edge of the desired pocket. The bayonet style clip is great for the display only of the clip, nothing else. The blade grind (flat) is preferrable to me. I am not a large fan of hollow ground blades.

On the subject of the FSA-98 (II), the blade is the same flat ground. The grip is comfortable and the action, very smooth. It is definately a larger knife. The grip is very secure.

On both the knives, the blades are very good grind, weight, and design. The serations are positive without being over done. The ambidextrious thumbstuds are small enough to not be in the way, but large enough to work exceptionally well. The grip style of the flash series needs little to no modifications. I have found with other knives a need to work away a small amount of material from the area around the thumb stud. Totally unneeded with the flash.

The one MINOR suggestion I have for the FSA-98 is the rounding of the outside edges of the handle scales. I have a suspicion that riding in the back pocket of my trousers will wear the trouser material.

How is that for only two days?

I do have one of the non-serrated FSA-8's on order.

Best wishes and best of luck to all,

Hi Hunterwright,

I'm a big auto knife fan and have played with quite a few. I noticed that you said the action on your Flash was "very smooth."

This is what has most impressed me with our Flash knives. The action is very smooth with almost no felt recoil, a smooth power band, and suffering no loss in speed. I personally don't mind a "kick" in a an auto opener, but I'm amazed that Spencer has been able to "kick that habit" (if you get my drift). ;)

Thanks for your additional comments. We always listen to customer input.

I understand the reference to auto. As a personal preference, I would rather use the term "semi-auto".

But hey, that's just me.

Out to church now, bye.

SOG's Flash knives (and similar competing knives on the market) are refered to as "assisted openers." My reference above to "auto" knives were specifically talking about switchblades. I'm sorry I was not clearer.

The following is my "personal" opinion: Assisted openers and switchblades are both "automatic" or "auto" opening knives. Both are propelled open by a spring. The basic delineator that identifies a knife as a switchblade by federal law is that the spring action begins after a button is pressed in the handle.

I fully understand the auto vs. assisted opening refernce. I was thinking for me, the term semi-auto fit well.

Hope the vacation is going well. Enjoy the time with the family.
