nice to meet you all here. i am in Beijing, China. here are also lot of knife lovers and collectors. recently, people here are very crazy on collecting M9 originally producted in USA. because the small quantity of US M9 in Chinese market, the price of M9 can be 10,000RMB,that is nearly $1,200USD. and Chinese weapon manufacturers also start to copy M9 under authrization of US manufaturers. can you be kind enough to tell sth of the performanc , quality of M9, is it worth so much? what do you think if I compare it with products of COLD STEEl, other products of BUCK. what is the ideal one for camping and out door sports? thank you all very much.

Hihi,

Welcome to the forums! I'm also from China and currently owning a Xian-feng M9. It looks good, and I haven't got a chance to try it out in the wild yet. There are several websites (in Chinese) that ever mentioned M9 bayonets, e.g.:

http://www.buckknives.net
http://www.dao.com.cn
http://www.knifeclub.com
http://www.cameraunion.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?forumid=3 (you can search here)
http://www.qbq.com.cn

The website of Xian-feng factory that producing China version M9 is:
http://www.xian-feng.com

Hope they will help.

Anyway I'm also interested in this topic. Look forward to hearing more comments from friends here.

Good luck.

Welcome to Bladeforums! The idea of anyone paying $1,200 for an M9 ... seems very odd. I guess supply and demand can do strange things to market prices. I have to wonder what alternatives are available in China. Is that the only knife of its kind you can get? It's not a popular knife here.

Click on "store" at the top of the page and you'll find an Ontario M9 for $89.99 ... I don't know how much shipping to China would cost; in fact I'm not even sure 1SKS ships to China, but somebody must....

Dear Cougar Allen,

Firstly, thank you very much for your reply. I always value much the opinion from professionals.

As to the alternative knife for m9, I can say all kinds of alternative knife for m9 are all very expensive here, most above 9000RMB--over $1000USD. You know, strictly speaking, selling these kinds of knives is illegal in China, but usually policemen interfere very rarely in these business and many large department stores in Beijing and other big cities in China have special counts selling knife for hunting or hiking, you can find Aitor, Sog, Buck, Benchmade,Gerber,Cold Steel, leatherman...in China. But those knives are still very limited here, so their prices are multiple here as in western market. That is because of demand and supply is badly balanced in China. I know only a Hong Kong company sells those famous knives in Beijing, it is agency for many worldfamous knives. Apart from that, some people run very small private business. Several local knife website do lots of propoganda for some knives and overplay their qualith, value and their limited volume of issuance, so prices for some knives are strangely high, such as BUCK-MASTER 184 priced 5000RMB, that is over $500. in 2001, big white cold steel kukri priced 4000-5000RMB,MOD 3000RMB.

I hope I have draw a clear picture on the situation in China.hope it will be helpful for you.

In addition, I am doing oveaseas transportaition business, as far as I know the rate for 20ft container from Fos, France to Xingang, Tianjin, China is about USD500.

I recently book a BUCK189 , what is you opinion about this knife? Thanks a lot

Best regards

hihi(Fangxc)

I'm not familiar with that knife, but someone who is will probably post. You can also try the Buck Knives forum here, in the Manufacturers section.

Hello and welcome to the forums.

$1,200? Oh my god!!!! I think it's all about supply and demand. I lived in Japan for 3 years, and some of the american made knives there cost 3 times the amount of the U.S. price. That's o.k. though if you are from that area and don't have access to the U.S. prices. In the military we are issued these M-9 bayonets. I have lost them and had them replaced for free. I couldn't imagine losing a $1,200 knife. I would be depressed. As far as performance is concearned. It is a good hard working field knife. I have never had any problems with one not performing properly. Are there better knives out there? Yes, but it all depends on what you are looking for and how much they cost. When I first joined the military the M-9 was made by Buck, but then the issued knife was made by Phobis. I'm not sure who has the government contract now. Are you allowed to mail order and knives from the U.S. in China? You could save lots of money that way.

Thank you very much for your reply. You are the first one I met who served in US military and used the M9 personally. Thank your for you advise, I will ask my friend in US if he could do me a favour.

Guys, I have never felt so lucky that I moved from China to USA! Yes, I know what you are talking about. I believe the main reason for the incredible price in China is the government restrictions. The price for Swiss Army knives in China is pretty fair, because the government more or less doesn't think they are weapons. You can buy a Swiss Army knife in almost any decent department store. But it's a different story for other knives, especially those military type, fixed blade knives.

Thanks for the links, I didn't know there are so many knife nuts in China! I am planning to visit China this Summer. Maybe we can have a beer together and talk about knives!

it is so bad that UPS China guys told me that it is impossible to mail a knife from US to China. But it sounds these guys are not very professional.nice to hear that you will visit Beijing in this summer look ing forward to meet u then.

Last year when I went back to China, I stuffed some knives (mostly spiderco folders) in my luggage and safely arrived in Beijing, no one bugged me at the airport. You don't know how excited my cousins were when I gave the knives out as gifts.

Don't know what to do this year. It's not a problem packing knives in luggage on the US part, but not sure if the luggage will be checked when I get Beijing.

It is also exciting for me to hear that. But I will not risk my friend's neck to ask him to carry a M9.esp after Sep 11 event. In China carrying knife in luggage was not a promble in the past, but now after Sep 11th, there is a new rule -- no knife shall be carried with you or in your luggage,so nobody sure what will happen. maybe you can try by taking a cheap tiny dialy used pocket knife in luggage to see what will happen?!:D

I guess one or two folders shouldn't be a big problem. But a M9? No, no.
I will at least take my Spyderco Delica with me this year. It's my daily carry. Maybe a Ka-Bar USMC to test the customs in Beijing.:-)

Is that for all baggage or just carry on bags?

hihi;
If you could come up with a good save way to receive a knife from the USA then I would sell you my Buck M9 for a whole lot less then $1200US.
I you can come up with a way then email me and maybe we can work out a better deal for you.

So what are the hot collectors items in China? I might be going to China in the near future.

I had not thought people had that much money to spend on a knife.

ok,I am pulling my hair and try to work out a way. Can you tell me sth about your M9?

In China, you can find many brands of world famous knves. but due to limited information and knowledge on knives here and small amount of them sold on the market in China, those knives such as cold steel, mod, buck, emerson, smith&welson.... all can be sold at very high price in China. But Swiss multipurpose knives are sold at same price as in western market because they are not regarded as weapons by the government and have been imported by large number. in last year, many new knife nuts were crazy about Jungle King, now they are eager to spent big money for BUCK M9, because they believe BUCK will not produce m9 anymore, the number of issued buck m9 are quite small, the value of m9 will stay at high level.

hihi;
The current M9 is made by Ontario knives. Mine is marked
M9
PHROBIS III
USA
Pat Pend
on one side of the blade and:
BUCK
188
USA X
on the other side of the blade. It has the green handle with bayonet lug and comes in a green plastic case with a nylon pouch on the front. It also has the wire cutting lug on the bottom of the case.Mine is in like new condition except for a polished spot along the wire cutting area.
