I'm gettin' a Manix! Got questions...

Ok, so I've been looking for a big folder for a while now and was just about to get the BM 630 skirmish, but then was torn between that and a Military, then a BM806D2, and now the Manix. I really wanted to stick with Spyderco because I think it's such a great company. I mean, seriously, I bought my first (and only, for the moment) Spyderco, a FRN PE Delica, back in January as a 'beater' knife to use until my BM mini-AFCK got repaired, but ended up loving it so much that my BM just went out today for repair, and only because I'm going to give it to my brother. So as soon as I got it I posted a thread about how much I was impressed with it, and Sal himself replied thanking me. :D How many other companies' presidents/CEOs will personally thank you for buying their product?!

Anyways, I love the company and the product, and wanted to try another Spyderco, and came across a Manix for a great price, did some research, and bought it this morning. According to what I've read so far, it's a big knife, almost as big as the BM630. I plan on carrying it clipped in my right front pocket, but worry that it will be so big that I will have to devote an entire pocket to it. I would hate to do that, since I usually have a lot of stuff in my pockets like chapstick, hand cream, change, etc. I carry my Delica everyday now, and it doesn't get in the way of accessing my pocket. Will the Manix be dramatically different? Also, when at work, I wear wool slacks and keep my Delica inside my pocket, because my co-workers would freak out if they knew I carried a knife to work everyday (one of my co-workers saw me using my knife once, and asked why I carried such a "big" knife with me all the time, and this was my Delica!!!). So, the plan was getting a smaller more sheeple friendly knife to use at work, and keep the Manix either in my pocket or in my car :barf: if I must. So, is the Manix so big that if I kept it in my pocket, it'd render it completely useless? Will it weigh my pants down so much that it'll look awkward?

My other question was, the blade looks somewhat 'stubby' or 'squashed' from the pictures I've seen. I think this is mainly because the handle seems so long for blade that is only 3.75" (versus the Military's 4"+ blade). It also seems the blade is wide as well. Is this 'squashed' effect as pronounced as it seems in pictures or is it all in my head?

I also read a thread where people are changing out the washers in their Manixes to copper ones. What is the purpose of this? Is this something that voids the warranty? Will the factory do this modification?

Thanks for the replies in advance!

I carry my Manix/CE regularly and I must tell you, it's one helluva knife. When I carry it though, (right front pocket) it doesn't feel that heavy. I must admit that I don't carry anything else in my RF pocket but a knife...

I think the Manix has an excellent blade to handle ratio, better in fact than that Military, quarter inch less blade, but nearly half an inch less handle. It is, however, both thick and somewhat heavy. Blade is the same thickness as the Military, and both are flat ground, so performace would be very similar, with the taller Manix blade having perhaps a very slight advantage due to the decreased angle of the wedge. Neither would be my choice for loose pocket carry, the Military is too long for my tastes, and the Manix too bulky. But I do not use a clip and tend to be "a bit" conservative about the maximum size knife I feel comfortable carrying.

You might want to check out the Stretch, heck of a lot "more knife" than a Delica, but in a reasonably light, reasonably compact package.

Manix for $101.70 for today (7/21) only.

Nope, I have no financial interest in Cove Cutlery. I get their "deal of the day" e-mail, that's all. :)

I carry my Manix daily, and dont notice the weight. Today I had my Manix, some change and my car key all in the same pocket without any problems.

Going from a Delica to a Manix is a big change, but it shouldn't be too bad.

I don't carry my Manix a lot (when doing heavy work), but when I do it is not a bulky, heavy feeling (I am a small person).
I carry Manix in the wasteband of my pants, clip out. Can't tell it's there.
Good Luck!

Ok, I just got this in the mail today, and HOLY CRAP!!! what a monster. Seriously, I was expecting it to be big, but this thing is massive! And that blade is huge. It isn't super long, but it's "beefy". I haven't really had a chance to cut anything with it so far, but I was able to easily slice some newspaper I had lying around. I compared it to the Delica I had been carrying around for the last 6 months or so, and it made it look so puny. I gave my Delica to my ex-girlfriend/best friend (long story...) and so I need something to "fill the void". I already ordered a SE FRN Dragonfly which should be here sometime next week to carry to work where the Manix will undoubtedly impress some, but scare most of the people. I also an really looking forward to that burgundy Calypso jr. with the new ZDP189 steel, which should be a really nice replacement for my Delica.

Anyways, the action is super smooth, ergos are awesome, and even carrying it around all afternoon was easy and I didn't even notice it was there. It isn't really deep carry, but it is very inconspicuous for its size. The only thing is that the clip is really tight, and it is sometimes hard to clip into my pocket without manually opening the clip a bit first. I also need to change it to tip-up carry but I suppose that can be done easily. I forsee the black clip getting scratched up pretty badly like my Delicas', and think the gray/satin clip on the VG10 lightweight Calypso jr. would look awesome on there. (Any way to order one of those, and will it even fit?) All in all, one really awesome knife. Spyderco has once again impressed me very much. Oh, I also ordered up a Sharpmaker to keep my knives scary sharp. Anyone have experience sharpening up a Manix on these? Do the angles match up pretty well? Anyways, thanks Sal! I think there are going to be many more Spyderco's for me in the future.

Glad you like it! Just did a quick check and, somewhat to my surprise, the Caly Jr clip would fit perfectly. Only caveat is that a few people have found the hole which allows it to sit over the pivot pin causes it to break at that point eventually.

Is the Calypso jr clip held in with 3 screws like the clip in the Manix? Or is it more like the Delica's clip where it is just one big hole? Also, what angle would I use to touch up my Manix on my sharpmaker? 30 degree flats? Would I even need to use the corners?

Three screw, same pattern as the Manix, but with a hole to clear the pivot rivet. Picture may be easier to understand...

That's really cool if it'd fit. Only question now is, where can I find an extra calypso clip? Do you think Spyderco just has them laying around somewhere and would be willing to sell me one?

A few swipes on the flats and you are all set. It's hard to explain but you can really feel the quality of the heat treat when you sharpen Sals S30v. It doesn't slide on the stone as others do. The steel has a real good grip when you touch it up. It stays sharp a LONG time, longer than most. The edge geometry helps.

A few swipes on the white stones, at 30 or 40 degree setting? Also, I know this may be a stupid question, but when should I touch up the knives? I don't want it to get too dull before doing it, but I also don't want to do it excessively when I don't really need to. (although I guess there isn't any real harm in that...)

White stones, 40 deg. I've used that for years on all of my knives. I test sharpness by slicing newsprint or better yet a page out of the phone book. (I have a phone book with about 400 pages cut out of it, just for that reason, my wife hates it.) If it cuts clean with no drag it goes into my pocket, or onto my duty belt depending where I am. Hope that helps.
